Class shines in spectacular race

Anthony Beare’s class shone brightly at Borderline Speedway last Monday night when he won an entertaining second round of the MJS Street Stock Series.

Beare was forced to overcome an alternator issue and numerous battles on his way to the hard-fought win.

The evidence of his troubles was there for all to see as the decorated Street Stock racer crossed the finish line without a door on the driver’s side of his Holden VF Commodore.

Beare said the victory was more satisfying than most due to the taxing nature of the weekend. “To be honest we have struggled at the start of the season which made us up our game,” he said. “It always feels better when you work harder for results. “We had to get torn up to do it, but that is racing.”

Beare’s first setback occurred in his maiden appearance on the dirt oval. It appeared an easy Beare victory in the weekend’s opening heat, but his car dropped a belt and smashed the alternator.

The issue forced Beare to start the feature race back in the fifth row of the grid, while Sam Brumfield and Mark Jennings battled hard for the lead.

It did not take long for the first yellow flag to arrive when Jacob Mills went into the fence on lap two.

After a chaotic fight when racing resumed, Nathan Thorne established a lead before his main rivals including Beare got involved in a titanic four-car battle for second.

Beare said he planned to tackle the first phase of the race cautiously, but he was forced to get his elbows out. “I told myself I was just going to cruise through the first 15 laps to be in a good position,” he said.

“But when the green light goes you turn into an idiot and I got bashed around a bit. “We got up to second, but went back to fifth and regained second again. “I had some awesome races with some of the cars.”

When the direction changed from anti-clockwise to clockwise for the second and final phase, Thorne led Beare, who enjoyed a lightning restart to sprint away from Mount Gambier youngster Jayden Edwards.

It did not take long for Beare to close the gap and pile the pressure on Thorne and the former made a move at turn three after a side-by-side duel.

Beare appeared to have made the move stick, but Thorne criss-crossed to the inside and made contact ripping the number 46 off his rival’s pink car.

The debris brought out another caution and Thorne was given the lead under the yellow flag.

However, the sequence of events only fuelled Beare to push even harder and a stunning move around the outside of turns three and four sealed the victory. Beare said he enjoyed racing hard with Thorne for the win.

“When we turned around my car was probably a little bit better than the leader’s,” he said. “I outfoxed him, then he took a dive and good on him. “We might have made contact, but at the end of the day we both drove away.”

Thorne marginally held onto second place ahead of a fast-finishing Edwards. Beare has a big new year ahead with a baby expected early this month, while he also plans to race for the WA State Title.

In the other categories, the SSA Super Sedans A Main was dominated by Ash Bergmeier.

He led all 15 laps and was followed by Paul Blenkiron and Kym Jury.

The Modlites SA class kept spectators entertained in its return to Borderline Speedway.

Brian Chadwick collected the most points to claim the COVID Christmas Cup ahead of Ryan Alexander and Michael Miller.
