Classic vehicles on spring tour

The Mount Gambier Veteran and Vintage club will this weekend host its 57th consecutive tour for collectible vehicles.

The event was previously held on the Australia Day weekend, however COVID caused a rescheduling and since the pandemic it has been held in Spring.

While numbers remain lower than pre-COVID, this year the club has 55 vehicles with more than 100 people and an interesting and diverse range of vehicles.

There will be three vehicles pre-1930, with a 1926 Standard Open Tourer being the oldest.

This is an English make and has not participated before.

There will also be a local 1927 Dodge Tourer and a rare desirable Cadillac 452 Club Sedan of 1930 vintage.

Frequent visitors Trevor and Lorraine Bythein will return after an absence and they have a 1936 Chrysler 07 Sedan, usually towing their vintage caravan.

Another 1930s vehicle is a 1935 Morris Tourer Model 8, a lovely little car locally owned.

There will be three commercial vehicles including a huge Kenworth Prime Mover, Morris Tray Truck and a 1942 Ford Truck.

All of these are locally owned and restored by their owners.

The rest of the vehicles range in years of production from the 1940s to 1990.

Makes such as Austin, Audi, Pontiac, Plymouth, MG, Chevrolet, Ford, Renault, Honda, Jaguar, Alfa Romeo, Porsche, Valiant, Volkswagen, Nissan, Wolseley, Riley, Daimler, Toyota and Triumph will be represented in various numbers.

A pizza night with entertainment will be held tomorrow whilst the touring activities will start on Saturday morning from the Shelton Street clubrooms, with vehicles leaving at 9.30am for Glencoe.

Entrants will visit the National Trusts Leake Bros’ Woolshed, OneFortyOne Pine tree nursery and a member’s stationary engine collection before travelling on to Mount Burr General Store for lunch.

Following lunch the tour will travel through the main street of Millicent, briefly pausing at KCA Mill at Tantanoola for a photo shoot, before visiting the HollaFresh Herb production facility for a tour.

A dinner will be held at Western Tavern on Saturday night.

Sunday morning activities will commence at 8.30am with a free public display at the Lady Nelson Visitor Centre until 10am.

The vehicles will then depart for Kilsby’s Sinkhole and Sinkhole Gin Distillery, with some going on to the Little Blue Lake and Mount Shank.

The tour will conclude with a barbecue lunch, presentation of fun awards and farewells.
