Clever Man sweeps Millicent Cup

Clever Man sweeps Millicent Cup

For the first time the 3MP Millicent Cup was held at Mount Gambier’s Allan Scott Glenburnie Racecourse last Sunday afternoon.

In front of a large crowd in attendance and great weather early in the day fans were treated to some great horse racing on the eight-race event.

The Glenburnie course has been the playground of Clever Man and the horse trained by Mount Gambier’s own Trevor White made it a hat-trick on its home track.

The in-form horse was on the money in the feature race with a fast finish.

At the 800-metre mark the horse made its move to charge through the pack and up on the leader.

With 400 metres to go Clever Man put the skates on and dashed off in a sprint to the finish line.

No one had an answer to the sprint home with runner-up Bear Arms trailing two tenths of a second back defying a start price of $17.

The five-year-old gelding Clever Man trained by White has had a great campaign over the last month winning most features that it has run.

White was thrilled to accept the winner’s trophy and said Clever Man would enjoy a breather after a huge season of success.

“I am very happy with how the horse ran and now it’s time for a well-earned rest for Clever Man,” he said.

The owners of the horse were also ecstatic with the win and praised the large crowd for their support and thanked the major sponsor 3MP.

In the opening race of the day Duhlata took the win two lengths ahead from Floyds Prediction and Carry On Flying in a 1550m gallop of the Mount Gambier course.

Rebel Leyla took the finish from Fiveohwon and One More Thrill in race two where the winners come from deep in the pack in a sprint to the line.

Race three was a start to finish win for Oamaru Poppy, who was never challenged, while Detnaw and Rich Memories followed.

Race four had the closet finish for the day with Old Time Rock crossing the line a nose in front of favourite Tequila storm, while Sitting Bull was just half a tenth back.

A steady group galloped around for the Mayura Station race five and Anewdaydawning came from the outside to win by a neck from All Orphan and Aeroette.

Right from the get-go Loose Lip Lloyd had the whip cracking in a good win and in a tight finish for the minor placings Star Jan Was judge and Melissa Kate followed home.

Ten horses started the final race for the day where Last dream had the honours of crossing the line first from Lady Annabel and back in third was Grand host.
