An historic Robe mansion will be open to the public as part of History Month.
The Robe History Group are hosting their event “Etched in Glass “at Moorakyne on May 17-18.
With the cooperation of owners Margaret and Donald Ferguson, guided tours through the house will be provided.
Moorakyne was built in 1853 for shipping merchant George Ormerod.
“Hear the fascinating stories of this important era in Robe’s colourful history and see the many original features in this grand old heritage listed home,” a Robe History Group spokesperson said.
“Wander through the garden and outbuildings at your leisure.”
The 12-roomed limestone house and several outbuildings sit in a prime position on an acre of coastal land overlooking Lake Butler.
The Fergusons bought the property in 2017 and spent several years restoring the mansion before focusing on the neglected garden in 2020.
Early photos show there was originally a cottage garden in front of the mansion, and remnants of original stone garden walls and borders remain, which have become the edging for paths and the lawned area in front of the house.
Around 1910, Norfolk Island pines were planted, and now they provide privacy and personality to the property but also present challenging conditions for gardeners.
