Coastal Lions roar into action

The Beachport Rivoli Bay Lions Club had a busy time leading up to Christmas undertaking a number of repairs to structures in the area.

These included repairs to Lanky’s Well, Durants Lookout and recently the shade shelter at the Salt Lake.

The club’s publicity officer David Snook said the structure was built in 1985 while Paul Van Komen was president of the club.

“Several years ago, a mini tornado tore the roof off the shelter and dumped it at least a hundred meters away, on the side of the road entering the Salt Lake,” Mr Snook said. “It has sat in a state of disrepair ever since while the Wattle Range Council debated whether to repair it, or completely remove it.

Of concern to council was the continued erosion of the sand dunes by the sea, immediately behind the lake in an area known as the Salmon Hole.”

Mr Snook said council, in conjunction with the State Government and aerial surveys, had measured the advancement of the erosion and felt within three to five years the sea would break into the Salt Lake, which would mean re-routing of the Bowman Scenic Drive and subsequently the possible removal of the shelter.

“The Lions club invited Wattle Range Council’s Works Engineer Peter Halton to a meeting to discuss the shelter and other projects that we could cooperate on,” he said. “Peter’s opinion was that council could do a temporary repair by putting shade cloth on the roof. Knowing the wind in Beachport would tear that to shreds in a short time, the Lions club disagreed with this course of action.

“President of the club Michael Coonan, who is known for his excellent negotiating skills, approached Peter and they arrived at a solution. “The roof of the museum was to be replaced and there was enough suitable roofing iron to effect the repair to the shelter.

In addition, council would supply materials such as timber and flashing to complete the job and the Lions would provide labour. “Twelve members restored the shelter to its former glory in half a day considering it had sat there looking an eye sore for at least three years.”
