There was an all-time record of 68 stalls when the long-running Beachport Street market was held in perfect weather along a closed Railway Terrace on Saturday.
Saturday marked the start of the Labor Day holiday long weekend and the date also fell within the Victorian and South Australian school holidays.
As a result, hundreds of shoppers enjoyed the carnival atmosphere and the local bricks-and-mortar businesses also did a brisk trade.
Dating back 20 years, the open-air market is conducted under the auspices of the Beachport District Development Association and is one of three staged by it each year.
The others are held at Easter and Christmas when the seaside port again fills with holidaymakers.
Association president Ros Brown was kept busy manning a barbecue but took time out to express her delight with the large number of stalls and shoppers.
Ms Brown said the profits from the day would again be used by the BDDA to fund community projects.
She said the association and Wattle Range Council would be funding two fireworks displays on New Year’s Eve at a cost of $15,000.
“The BDDA will also be staging the Beachport Crayfish Festival in its own right in 2024,” Ms Brown said.
