Cold snap dampens Easter market mood

Some stallholders appear to have been “spooked” by a poor weather forecast and withdrew from the long-running Beachport Street market along a closed Railway Terrace on Saturday.

Nevertheless, hundreds of shoppers were not deterred by the grey skies and enjoyed the carnival atmosphere and a variety of wares.

It was assisted by music from Mount Gambier entertainers Jason and Christy Wallace.

Saturday marked the second day of the Easter holiday long weekend and the date also fell within the Victorian school holidays.

Dating back 20 years, the open-air market is conducted under the auspices of the Beachport District Development Association and is one of three staged by it each year.

The others are held at October and Christmas when the seaside port again fills with holiday-makers.

BDDA secretary Ros Brown was the market day coordinator in the absence of Pamela Stratford.

Ms Brown said 64 stalls had been booked but about a dozen withdrew when they heard the weather prediction.

“There was a brief shower when the market began and a few others packed up and left,” Ms Brown said.

“It was a shame about the weather.

“We still rate the market day as being a success as there were a lot of people about.

“The two caravan parks at Beachport have been very busy.”

Among the day-trippers were Mount Gambier couple Dr Luke Green and Yianna Nikoloutsopoulos.

Dr Green spent his formative years in Millicent and has just completed six years of medical and surgical university studies in Adelaide.

He is spending his internship year at Mount Gambier Hospital with a long-term aim of becoming a general surgeon in regional South Australia.

His partner has also moved from the capital city to the Blue Lake city to work as an optometrist.
