Community leader steps aside

Glencoe community leader Dale Price recently stood down from a local group after 33 years of leadership but he will continue as a Sorby Adams representative on Wattle Range Council.

Cr Price has been either president or secretary of the Glencoe Progress Association since 1988. He stepped down from the leadership role at the end of last month. The Majardah Poll Dorset sheep stud co-proprietor spent most of his working life as an educator at schools across the region.

Originally from Victoria, he trained to be a teacher at Salisbury Teachers College in suburban Adelaide in the 1970s. He retired from the Education Department at the end of 2010 with the final 14 years of his teaching career spent as the principal of Penola Primary School.

He was elected to the council later that year and subsequently re-elected at the 2014 and 2018 elections. Speaking at the April monthly council meeting in Millicent, Cr Price said he felt obligated to distance himself from the leadership of the Glencoe Progress Association in order to move a Glencoe-specific motion.

He successfully moved the Wattle Range Council mowing and slashing program equivalent to the service provided to Rendelsham, Furner, Beachport and Tantanoola be extended to include the area within the 50kph zones in Glencoe.

The program will include the National Trust Leake Brothers Woolshed, Glencoe Public Hall, Bowling Club, Keelap Glade and the Lake Leake recreation area.

Cr Price said it was a matter of equity as Glencoe property-owners had hitherto been responsible for mowing their own verges. After 15 minutes of debate, his motion was unanimously supported.
