SA Police have moved to reassure the Mount Gambier community that it is adequately resourced, after reports surfaced online the city’s police station was closed on weekends.

The SE Voice was notified that a person who had allegedly been assaulted in the Blue Lake city was unable to make a police report at the Mount Gambier station, after arriving at the Bay Road premises to find a note advising the station was closed.

The woman had allegedly been assaulted in the carpark of a Mount Gambier shopping centre, suffering swelling and bruising to her face, and had to make a police report via the non-urgent telephone service.

However, a police spokesperson said the station had only been temporarily closed on Saturday.

“On Saturday, the Mount Gambier Police Station was temporarily closed due to the need to redeploy the rostered officer to frontline patrol duties. This decision was made to prioritise community safety and ensure adequate police coverage across the region,” the spokesperson said.

“We’d like to clarify the signage on the station’s front doors. It does not state the station has been unattended since December 2024. Instead, it informs the public that regional station opening hours were updated from that date.

“The signage clearly outlines the current days and times the station is open to the public.”

The spokesperson said police were investigating the alleged assault.

“Regarding the recent incident involving a community member, police have contacted the individual, and an investigation is currently under way,” the spokesperson said.

“The person involved was understanding of the situation and expressed satisfaction with the follow-up provided.

“We want to reassure the community the Mount Gambier Police Station remains operational. While the hours of operation have changed, this is not a recent development and has been communicated publicly through signage and other channels.”

The spokesperson said the current opening hours for the Mount Gambier Police Station are Monday to Friday 9am-5pm, Saturday and Sunday 9am-3.30pm and closed on public holidays.

“Members of the public are advised that should they attend the police station outside opening hours and are unable to phone police, they can use the wall mounted emergency intercom which is situated near the front doors,” the spokesperson said.
