Council considers replica options for doomed landmark

Areplica of the Robe Obelisk could cost as much as $1.3m.

The current structure is almost 170 years old and is danger of collapsing into the sea.

Chairperson Richie White recently provided the community with an update on the progress of his Robe Obelisk Working Party.

A public meeting was held by the Robe District Council at the end of the summer holiday period to gather community feedback.

Mr White highlighted that a decision was made to proceed with a replica option.

He said this option has been endorsed by the council and to move forward with a development application.

However, it is important to note the Robe District Council has not yet formally approved any plans or costings.

The proposed location for the replica has been identified as the site adjacent to the Obelisk/Old Gaol Carpark, approximately 50m north of the Old Gaol.

This site is subject to ministerial approval and further consultation.

Published notes of the public meeting state Robe architect and newly-appointed Working Party member John Hinge presented the designs for the replica, which have not yet been finalised.

However, two potential design options have been identified by the Working Group.

Option one is a true-to-form obelisk with some sort of superstructure, followed by stone cladding on the outside.

The estimated cost for this option is between $1.1 to $1.3m.

Option two is a pre-cast concrete structure which would be finished with a sand-blasted technique to provide an authentic look and feel.

This option would use high-quality paint designed to last 10 to 15 years with minimal maintenance and come at a fifth of the cost of option 1.

The replica would have identical dimensions to the current revered structure and would be in line with the plans held by the State Library of South Australia.

Both options will be subject to community feedback and development approval before proceeding.

In response to a query from the floor, the location near the Old Gaol was chosen as it is higher than the current Obelisk and would provide better visibility of the replica from the sea and surrounding areas.

It is also a more suitable location considering coastal erosion concerns, and it offers parking facilities for visitors.

The Robe community may be required to fund a portion or the full amount for the replica, depending on whether the Working Party secures grant funding.
