Council eager to slash hazard

The current high level of roadside vegetation may require it to be slashed on weekends by Wattle Range Council staff.

The suggestion was made by senior staff at a recent council meeting and followed a query raised by Councillor Dennis Muhovics.

He suggested that outside contractors could perhaps be sourced to undertake this work.

Engineering services director Peter Halton said the growth was brought about by late rains.

Council has also issued a media statement on this issue.

“We understand the concerns of our rural residents regarding the significant growth of roadside vegetation in current weather conditions, and we want to assure the community that we are aware of the impact it has on visibility and road and bushfire safety,” the statement said.

“Rest assured, Wattle Range Council is working hard to mow and slash their way across the council region to reduce the load and tackle this issue as quickly as possible.

“Council has also made contact with Department of Transport Infrastructure about roadside slashing on the main roads.

“They are also progressing slashing work in the Lower South East.”

Meanwhile, Member for MacKillop Nick McBride has also raised this matter in State Parliament.
