Council flushes funds towards toilet projects

Work is under way on two toilet projects at Millicent and Mount Burr which are budgeted to cost Wattle Range Council almost $27,000.

Disabled access is being improved to the public toilets alongside the Mount Burr general store.

Wattle Range Council received the request from Sorby Adams Ward elected member Deb Agnew on the plight of a disabled visitor who struggled to use the disabled toilet facilities due to rough grassy surface at entrance.

Engineers from the council inspected the site and proposed to put a sealed access path over the existing grass patch between the road and disabled toilet which will address all the accessibility issues.

Meanwhile, automatic doors are being fitted to the public toilets at Millicent’s Jubilee Park.

According to a staff report, the manual padlocks will be replaced with automated doors on timers.

The project will reduce cleaning contract costs as council currently pays someone to attend twice per day 365 days per year to unlock the toilets in the morning and lock them again in the evening to prevent vandalism.

There was also recently an issue with a member of the public being locked in these toilets by the cleaner, which cannot occur with the autolocking doors.

The benefit to community is more consistent opening hours as the locks are set on a timer, rather than relying on a contractor to open and close.
