Councils keep festive cheer in check

Revellers in Robe’s and Beachport’s public areas will not be able to see in the New Year while in possession of alcoholic drinks.

Robe District Council has again joined Wattle Range Council in seeking to ban the possession of alcohol at seaside locations over the coming festive season.

The regulatory processes are under way to create ‘dry zones’ at Beachport and Robe and the duration of the temporary alcohol bans vary from town to town.

Among the other stakeholders in this process are SA Police, Member for MacKillop Nick McBride and the Liquor Licensing Commissioner.

The Robe dry zone will run from midday on Christmas Eve until midday on Sunday, January 2.

Robe District Council chief executive James Holyman said the dry zone area was the same as previous years.

“Council will advertise the dates and publish signage closer to the dry zone period,” he said.

“Last summer, with additional resources, council increased electronic signage and compliance controls during this period to reduce camping on public land, including Long Beach.

“This proved to be effective and council will again undertake these measures for this year.

“It is important to note that responsibility for security has been handed back to the Robe Sports and Recreation Association and the Robe Golf Club for management of their areas.

“The funding that has been traditionally allocated for security will be redirected for additional council services on behalf of all community members and visitors over this period such as waste, compliance activities and signage to educate visitors, such as no camping on public land.”
