Country police positions filled

The selection process to fill the vacancy at Beachport police station has been completed with Brevet Sergeant Rob Swift now in residence at the seaside post.

The Railway Terrace position was vacated in May by Brevet Sergeant Nick Wood after almost two years as officer-in-charge.

His arrival in July 2019 coincided with dedication of a new memorial by Police Commissioner Grant Stevens to late Aboriginal tracker Lanky Cana at the Beachport cemetery.

The initial term for Sgt Swift is also two years but he anticipates it could be longer.

His 13-year police career has comprised capital city postings and a stint in the APY Lands in the Far North.

In his spare time, Sgt Swift enjoys outdoor recreational pursuits such as fishing, camping and four-wheel driving.

He has appreciated the warmth of the welcome since arriving at Beachport and intends to become involved in the seaside community.

“I plan to join the Lions Club of Beachport and Rivoli Bay as well as the Beachport Surf Lifesaving Club,” he said.

Meanwhile, the civilian office manager’s position at Millicent police which had been vacant for the past four months has also recently been filled.

Senior police have recently resumed their long-running review into the staffing of country stations across SA and the outcome is eagerly awaited.

It was suspended in 2020 owing to the COVID situation.

The review is set to determine the fate of the Kalangadoo police station which has been unstaffed for almost four years.
