Couple strikes gold

Mount Gambier couple Max and Glenda Burston (pictured) have struck gold, recently celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary on September 11.

The pair met in 1963 before getting married a couple of years later at the old Salvation Army Church in 1971 and building their own house together in 1973.

“We met at my mother’s house in Mount Gambier because my sister had organised for Max to take me to a ball at the City Hall so it was my sister’s fault,” joked Mrs Burston.

“We always laugh about it but it turned out pretty good.

“We had an afternoon tea with family to celebrate which was lovely.”

Mrs Burston worked at the old Mount Gambier Hospital while Mr Burston was a fitter-welder working at different locations around town.

While the couple have seen many things change in Mount Gambier, their love has remained the same.

Mrs Burston said the secret to having such a long marriage was being good to each other.

“See each other’s point of view, work together and do lots of things together if you can,” she said.

“We have had a good life together, we have had some ups and downs but you get over those and you go again.

“We are very family oriented and I think family is very important even your extended family.”
