COVID vaccine booster eligibility expanded

COVID vaccine booster eligibility expanded

South Australians over the age of 30 are now eligible to receive their fourth (winter) dose of the COVID-19 vaccination under new guidelines that took effect this week.

Adults older than 50 are being strongly recommended to get their fourth jab while those over 30 are also being urged to get the winter dose for the best possible protection against the new Omicron variants.

A total 600 pharmacies and GP practices – which now provide the majority of vaccinations across the state – have ample supply of the COVID vaccine to meet increased demand and will play a vital role in administering fourth doses.

SA Health clinics will also expand, offering extended hours to provide additional vaccination options in the community and help combat rising COVID case numbers.

The changes mean more than 236,000 South Australians aged 50 to 64 years can receive their winter dose, and roughly 255,000 adults aged 30 to 49 can also come forward to get a fourth vaccine.

More South Australians at higher risk of severe illness from COVID will also be able to access life-saving antiviral treatment.

Anyone aged over 70 who tests positive to COVID can now access oral antivirals through their GP on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme, while people over 50 with at least two risk factors are also eligible under the expanded program.

Contact the National Coronavirus Hotline on 1800 080 020 to check eligibility.
