Creative minds get to work

December 13 marked the final day of the Penola Maker’s Market, which showcased the impressive creativity the town has to offer.

The pop-up market was a first for Penola and was open for four weeks on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, starting on November 20.

Event organiser Deb Redman said Penola was a town full of local talent and the Maker’s Market brought something different and certainly special to the town.

There was a huge variety of affordable wares for sale including hand-made pieces crafted by local individuals or groups, antique furniture and baked goods.

Ms Redman said due to COVID people had more time to get creative and sort through old treasures.

The organiser said the market gave people an opportunity to buy and sell their locally-made products and each week new people had jumped on board to share their wares with the community.

“I think this year in particular, people are really keen to support locals and to support each other,” Ms Redman said. “The community spirit has been lovely.

“A huge thank you to the people who have supported it. “It’s given people another reason to come to Penola for a drive and I’m hoping it’s been beneficial to all the businesses around town.”

Ms Redman said many people wandered through to pick up a special bargain or do some Christmas shopping, with a percentage of the money the market raised to be donated locally.

Riddoch Business and Community Association president Bec Trotter said she enjoyed the Maker’s Market and hoped to see it in Penola again.

“I think it’s fantastic for Penola, it’s really great to showcase our local talent,” she said.
