Cricket action returns with open day

The winter sports may still be wrapping up, but summer is just around the corner and the South East Women’s Cricket Association is ready for the new season – hosting an open day alongside the Glenelg Cricket Club.

The event held at Mount Gambier’s Frew Park and Bordertown’s Virgo Park is open to people of all abilities who want to have a go at the sport.

It may only be September, but the international season has already started with Zimbabwe recording a famous underdog win against Australia last weekend and the latest instalment of the special Chappell-Hadlee Trophy currently being playing in Cairns.

More closer to home, teams have started training sessions and this weekend will be all about the female game with Glenelg Cricket Club women’s coach Graham Sedunary visiting the region to share his knowledge.

SEWCA recruitment officer Fiona Young said the special session would be focused on developing the skills of current cricketers, plus opening the door to some new faces.

“We are very fortunate to have Graham coming down and it will be a great opportunity for players and coaches to gain more expertise,” she said.

“We are hoping to get as many current and new players as possible.

“It will probably be a one-hour intensive skills session and after that we will either have a net session or scratch match with the locals to get back into the swing of things.”

Young also hopes the visit from Glenelg not only improves the skills of the locals, but also helps build a clearer pathway between the South East region and the district club to make it easier for players to rise up the ranks.

“We are probably a bit of an untapped resource for them, so it is also about promoting the players we do have and being so far from Adelaide the talent we do have is not acknowledged as much,” she said.

“I think it will be the first time we will have someone of Graham’s standing come down, so it is a great opportunity and hopefully opens up some doors for those who want to pursue it at a higher level.

“Hopefully it is the start of a mutually beneficial relationship moving forward.”

The Open Day will start at Frew Park at 9am before heading to Bordertown at 12.30pm and each session will go for at least an hour.
