Millicent v East Gambier
This weekend’s Western Border Football League round will feature a David versus Goliath match as unbeaten Millicent hosts winless East Gambier.
Millicent is coming off a massive win at home against a previously unbeaten West Gambier, proving to be the team to beat.
Millicent’s success over the past three years has established the Saints as a force to be reckoned with in the league, and they will be looking to maintain their winning momentum.
The Bulldogs will be determined to turn their fortunes around to prove they have improved in the past couple of weeks and their season is still salvageable.
The two teams have already faced each other in Round 1, where Millicent emerged victorious, and this result will give the Saints plenty of confidence going into the match.
For Millicent it will be a great chance to firm top spot with a percentage booster, while for East Gambier it’s an opportunity to turn the season around and cause a major upset.
North Gambier v South Gambier
South Gambier will be hoping to build on its first win of the season in round five with another win against North Gambier.
Last time these sides met South Gambier was blown away in the first quarter and could not recover.
This week the Demons will hope to avoid getting away to a slow start and instead challenge North Gambier.
Both sides have had issues playing four quarters of footy so far this season, for North Gambier that’s meant losing two games in which the Tigers could have been more competitive.
For South Gambier it’s been a much bigger issue as the Saints have only been able to win the one game.
The first quarter is sure to play a massive part in who gets points, following round one where it was a 38-1 first quarter in which the Tigers won by 27 points.
If they can play well from the first bounce the young Demons side could really take it to the Tigers and cause an upset.
North Gambier needs to win games like these if it is to be considered amongst the strongest teams in the competition like West Gambier and Millicent.
Last time these two met Nick McInernery was named best on ground after a dominant performance in the midfield.
He could be the difference once again if South Gambier is unable to limit his impact in the game.
For South Gambier a win could put the Saints into the four for the first time this season, for North Gambier it’s a step closer to being a genuine finals contender.
Casterton Sandford v West Gambier
Casterton Sandford will host a West Gambier team that has had its first taste of defeat against Millicent last round and the Cats will hope to capitalise on the Roos’ loss of momentum.
West Gambier will make the trip across the border hoping to reclaim its winning ways after a hiccup.
The Roos have impressed so far this season and one loss will not deter them from thinking themselves to be the real deal.
They knew Millicent in Millicent would always be a tough game, now they must focus on Casterton Sandford.
Last time they met Casterton Sandford were dealt with by West Gambier with ease, losing by 79 points.
It’s a tough turn around for Casterton Sandford, with the loss to surely play on the Cats’ minds going into the first bounce.
Casterton Sandford also suffered a disappointing loss in round five after being competitive for three quarters, until North Gambier got away in the final term for a 43 point loss.
Both sides will be out to get their seasons back on track, it is sure to be an enthralling contest as they battle it out for the four points.
If Casterton Sandford can play four quarters of footy expect it to be a closer affair than round one.
