Members of the Limestone Coast Youth Environment Council (LCYEC) were treated to a special one on one educational session with Dr Richard Harris OAM at Kilsby Sinkhole when he visited the region recently.
Dr Harris and LCYEC students discussed the importance of water in our region and learnt about the incredible underwater systems slowly and silently flowing beneath our feet.
Dr Harris spoke about his adventures and heroic efforts in the Tham Luang cave rescue, as well as providing an interactive diving experience in the local sinkhole.
Witnessing the stunning underwater world of the Kilsby Sinkhole was certainly a highlight.
“Being able to snorkel with Dr Harris and learn more about our water systems was very special. Learning about our local landscape and ways we can protect it are very important to me,” LCYEC student Dylan said.
Limestone Coast Landscape Board Educator Damien Bickley said it was an amazing experience for the students.
“Watching the students embrace the opportunity to hear from an underwater cave diving enthusiast such as Dr Harris and learn more about our amazing underwater world was fantastic,” he said.
“The enthusiasm and energy the students showed with their questions and interaction is a sign of their ongoing commitment to the local landscape.
“The Limestone Coast Youth Environment Council students are very passionate about environmental issues in our local landscape. To be able to take this opportunity when Dr Harris visited was unique and inspiring.”
The Limestone Coast Youth Environment Council, an initiative of the Limestone Coast Landscape Board supports young people in years 7 to 10 to explore and learn more about the environment and our local landscape, sharing their passion with other like-minded students across the region.
