Nangwarry v Port MacDonnell
Nangwarry just filling a side this week with a lot unavailable with injury, sickness and work, saw them have a completely different team line up for the round.
It took them a long time to settle and get used to each other, almost most of the quarter.
Port MacDonnell was strong in goals with Megan Hein at goal shooter being the focal point moving and positioning well.
The Demons moved the ball around the ring well. Even with the limited rebounds Nangwarry got they struggled to get ball past the centre third due to some tight defensive pressure from Port MacDonnell’s well-oiled team.
The Demons led by 15 at the first break.
The second quarter saw Port MacDonnell swap goalers and defence.
Nangwarry started to pick up this quarter being more patient with passing in attack.
Claire Ferguson worked hard for her team and having a great tussle with Shannon Scheidl.
Port MacDonnell really put the pressure on in defence, making Nangwarry feeders Tamara Ploenges and Ferguson work hard to get the ball to their goalers.
Cassie Dinnison started to position well in goals and really moved ball round to find right position.
The Demons jumped on any rebounds or bad passing and transitioned well out of defence into attack with Hein still playing strongly and combining well with Kori Collins.
Port MacDonnell lead 44 to Nangwarry’s 10 at half time, where the Saints made changes swapping Hayley Vanderhorst and Dinnison.
Port MacDonnell moved youngster Alysha Coon into centre, Scheidl to wing defence, Alana Berkefeld back to goal defence and to Kate Faint to goalkeeper.
Nangwarry pounced on that, playing much better this quarter in attack not throwing so many away.
Dinnison stepped up and moved ball around well and Ploenges feeding her accurately.
Port MacDonnnell’s Coon picked up playing in the middle utilising her speed down the court well, combining with Michelle Lewis and finding there goalers with some great feeding.
Kayla Gray picked up this quarter getting any rebounds and taking a few good intercepts making Collins have to work hard.
Port MacDonnell lead by 45 goals heading into the final break.
Chrystal Lock and Gray had a swap for Nangwarry in the last term, where the Demons intensity lifted to run out the game, even if the Nangwarry defence took a rebound or intercept, they struggled to get through centre area from tight defence pressure.
Lyndall Feast really worked hard at wing defence for the Saints driving hard and providing options for her team.
Unfortunately for Nangwarry they started to make some poor passing options in attack and made it easy for the Demons to get some intercepts.
Hein and Collins continued their strong attacking and combining well with high accuracy.
Port MacDonnell proved to be too strong for the depleted Nangwarry side.
Tantanoola v Kalangadoo
Tantanoola started off the first quarter strong with Keryl Ousey scoring the first two goals of the game, courtesy of a classy interception by Casey Walker at wing defence.
Ebony McDiarmid steadied Kalangadoo leading well from their attack line.
Tantanoola created turnovers with consistent full court pressure, while Kalangadoo relied on defensive rebounds to gain possession.
Emma Gould and Ousey were strong targets in the Tigers’ attack line and when delivered the ball with accuracy were difficult to beat.
Abbey Duncan led the Magpies with on court voice and worked overtime to create space.
The first quarter finished with Tantanoola in the lead 15-8.
The second quarter was goal-for-goal with Gould and Ousey shooting confidently for the Tigers.
Unforced errors from Tantanoola allowed Kalangadoo to get back in the game.
The Magpies began to settle and adjust to the absence of their strong midcourters, Jayde and Chloe Peacock.
Kate Varcoe remained calm under the physical pressure of Kalangadoo’s Jane Auld through the centre.
McDiarmid continued to be a focal point for the Magpies to bring the margin back to four goals at half time, with the half time score of 24-20.
Casey Walker took a classy interception from the goal circle edge to start the third quarter.
Kalangadoo stepped up its intensity and was rewarded with McDiarmid’s strong positioning and accurate shooting.
Despite the defensive pressure from Tayla Rowe and Kate Bromley, Kalangadoo had most of the play and were able to bring it to a two-point game going into the final quarter.
Both sides came out firing in the final quarter, increasing the game’s intensity to another level.
Kalangadoo’s defence of Lara Munro and Lauren Duncan continued to rebound strongly, making the most of any missed shots.
Time was held for an injury to valuable mid courter, Jami Walker, replaced with junior Bella Poulish.
Georgia Gentile took an impressive interception in a vital time of the game.
McDiarmid and Duncan continued to be calm under pressure and evened the score.
Rowe stepped up by taking interceptions and making it difficult for the Magpie feeders.
After a nail biting last few minutes, the game finished in a draw, finishing the match 43-43.
Mount Burr v Hatherleigh
Mount Burr broke Hatherleigh’s first centre pass through Mozzie Ella Easterby at wing attack to take a two-goal lead.
Defenders from both sides, Mount Burr’s Madi Haggett and Olivia Dean and Hatherleigh’s Elly Redden and Maddie Redman, took numerous interceptions until the Eagles finally scored from a centre pass.
Both teams let wayward passes dominate the quarter with Hatherleigh’s goal attack Demi Vanderhorst and Mount Burr’s Ebony Clark being the focus for their respective teams, having a calming effect on the game.
Hatherleigh’s wing attack Rosie Nettle worked hard to feed her goalies.
Haggett continued to work tirelessly to limit Hatherleigh goalies with the Mozzies taking the first quarter lead.
Hatherleigh settled quickly with strong drives from Erin Watson at centre and effective defensive rebounds to score the first five goals of the quarter.
Mount Burr looked shocked by Hatherleigh’s higher tempo and intensity.
Hatherleigh’s Goal Shooter Maddie Pulmer was brought into the game with strong holding and accurate feeding from Nettle and Watson.
The defensive pressure from both teams intensified with clear leads hard to come by.
Haggett and Dean had limited opportunity to take possession, whereas Redden and Redman taking strong rebounds.
Hatherleigh had a nine-goal turnaround to take a five goal lead.
Mount Burr brought on Ashlee Dean to goal attack to try to change the dynamic in the circle, while Tegan Telfer entered the court at wing defence for Hatherleigh.
The weather changed with the rain slowing the game and making it difficult for players to adjust.
It became a defensive quarter with both sides putting pressure on the ball.
Defensive turnovers were taken by both attacking and defensive players.
Vanderhorst shot accurately when she took possession of the ball.
Once again Redman took defensive rebounds to help extend the lead by two more goals.
Lauren Wheeler returned to goal attack for the Mozzies and Lara McGregor to goal defence for Hatherleigh.
The Eagles continued to apply strong defensive pressure and used turnovers to score the first three goals of the quarter.
Both sides had to work hard to gain possession, with Watson and Laura Schultz continuing to make space and drive to circle edge to feed into their goalies.
Pulmer was the focal point for Hatherleigh in the goal circle, shooting with accuracy and taking strong balls.
Haggett and Redman made turnovers in both defensive circles, but Hatherleigh was able to maintain their lead to win by 10.
Robe v Glencoe
Robe came out firing in the first quarter with lots of defensive pressure down the court, Emma Wheal was working in overtime in the defensive goal circle for Robe – making some crucial turnovers to give Robe the lead at quarter time 10 to 7.
The second quarter was hotly contested with Robe’s Sarah Laurie stepping up in the goal circle and dominating the quarter, with some strong holding and rebounding, scoring all of Robe’s 13 goals for the quarter.
Glencoe’s goalies Jenna Paproth and Chantelle Cocks started to combine well and shot with accuracy, scoring 10 for the quarter.
While Glencoe’s Sarah Edwards was playing well in their defence line keeping Tori Gluyas scoreless for the quarter.
With the score being 23 to 17 at half time, it was still anyone’s game.
The third quarter was once again hotly contested with some great passages of play by both teams.
Robe had to keep their heads, as the game started to get quite physical, however they did this with confidence and held strong and made the most of their turnovers.
Robe’s Lucy Perkins and Annie Regnier drove well and passed with precision into the circle.
Both teams scoring 10 gaols for the quarter.
The last quarter saw both teams come out strong fighting hard for the win, however Robe’s defensive pressure won them turnovers and was rewarded a score, Laurie once again stepped up for Robe, scoring 12 of their 13 goals for the quarter.
Robe won the clash 46 to 38.
