Apollo Football Club was crowned champion of the Barry Maney Group Limestone Coast Premier League on Saturday after a big win over Millicent United at Casadio Park.
Both sides were competitive early in the first half, with no goals scored in the opening minutes of the game.
Apollo applied relentless pressure and eventually broke the game open halfway through the stanza when Deni Atkin found the back of the net to give her side the lead.
Apollo continued to press Millicent as they looked to get another before half time, with their hard work paying off late in the half as they struck again, this time coming from Daylia Daylia.
After a big first half Apollo went into the half time break with a two goal lead.
The same story continued in the second half for Apollo as they kept their foot on the pedal and refused to give Millicent many chances at cutting into the lead, despite their efforts.
Millicent’s task became harder halfway through the second stanza as Daylia again found the back of the net, scoring her second goal of the match.
Despite being down three goals, the Millicent players refused to drop their heads as they continued to make runs but struggled to find the back of the net.
With victory in reach Apollo continued to give it their all late in the game when Zoe Brooksby scored the fourth and final goal of the match to seal the championship victory.
Apollo defeated Millicent United 4-0.
Apollo’s Daylia Daylia was named best on ground in the grand final with a two goal performance.
After the match Apollo coach Paul Prentice spoke to The SE Voice about his side’s victory.
“It’s been a few years in the making and we have got an excellent squad of youth and experience and it just all came together,” he said. “It feels fantastic to be honest.”
Prentice said he was pleased with how his side played in the tough conditions
. “I thought Bibi Paw at left back did well and Toni Ingley-Smith had a good game as well as Deni Atkin who caused problems for them and my midfield that I rotated with four or five players did well to control the ball,” Prentice said.
