Dredging plans explained

Additional information has been provided to The SE Voice by Wattle Range Council chief executive Ben Gower about council’s intentions regarding the dredging of the Beachport recreational boat ramp with respect to the 2025/26 season.

His statement provides clarity to the report in today’s edition about the discussions at Tuesday’s council meeting.

“’Council staff recommended trialling an extended dredge next year which was ultimately endorsed,” Mr Gower said.

“The trial was proposed to allow more sand to be removed from the basin at the beginning of the fishing season to extend the season as long as possible without requiring a second dredge.

“While we did discuss two dredges per year, Engineering services director Peter Halton highlighted the considerable additional cost associated with mobilisation and demobilisation each dredging campaign, and that it is cheaper to do one larger campaign than two smaller ones.”
