South Eastern Automobile Club members had a big weekend of activities recently, with a motorkhana and a social “mystery tour”.
Glenburnie Saleyards hosted the Round 5 motorkhana action under the direction of Jason Sims.
Course layout for the first test “gate slalom” was a good test to wake up the driver and Blair Meek, wearing the number 1 for the da, y certainly enjoyed his “new” Falcon.
Phil Wilson set the time to beat (26.01) from Henry Sims (26.33), Scott Bradley (26.59), Dylan Maloney (27.06), Jason Sims (27.73), Geoff Wilson (27.93), Harrison Bliss (28.37), Cohen Hamilton (29.02), Rebel Skirving (29.07) and Max Viitanen (29.30) making the top 10.
The same layout, second run, Jason Sims put a good run together to top the list (25.78) from Phil Wilson (26.49), Scott Bradley (26.67) settling in well in his Pulsar Wagon, Henry Sims (26.72), Dillan Young (27.05), Dylan Maloney (27.90), Cohen Hamilton (28.36), Max Viitanen (28.59), Geoff Wilson (28.62) and Harrison Bliss (28.85) the quickest 10 of the 17 that lined up for a day’s competition.
A course change was made to a classic test of “straight slalom”, a simple row of five cones to weave through, turn around a set of four cones at the top, then weave through the five cones and finish in the correct “garage”.
Best on the first pass, Phil Wilson made it look easy in the EA Falcon (22.09) with Jason Sims in the family Celica nipping at his heels (22.19), Dillan Young (22.44), Henry Sims (22.60), Scott Bradley (22.80), the fastest 5 all on the same “second”, 22.09 to 22.80.
Harrison Bliss, using a more aggressive driving style in the Subaru (23.08), Dylan Maloney (23.40), Geoff Wilson (23.96), Max Viitanen (24.21) and Blair Meek (26.12) getting the “hang” of what the Falcon can do rounding out the top 10.
Phil Wilson bettered his previous run to top the sheet on the second pass at this “simple” test, with a 21.83 second time against his name, Jason Sims (22.31), Dillan Young (22.53), Henry Sims (22.79), Harrison Bliss (22.91), Dylan Maloney, working the Laser quite hard (23.28), Cohen Hamilton (23.47), Geoffrey Wilson (23.53), Rebel Skirving (24.13) and Scott Bradley (24.19) for 10th.
Butterfly was the next test, a nine-cone layout that is tight and twisty, needing good control to get through without collecting penalties.
Phil Wilson made it look easy, putting the Falcon through the gaps in 26.92 seconds.
Henry Sims, improving his skill set on every run (and keeping his dad on his toes) next with a 29.30 second run, Dad Jason (30.05), Geoff Wilson, well awake on this run, (30.23), Dillan Young (30.86), Max Viitanen (31.18), Dylan Maloney (31.30), Josh Munn (31.38) punishing the 180bSSS in his “normal” style, Cohen Hamilton (31.42) with the enjoyment level turned up a bit, and Rebel Skirving (37.22) with another smooth drive, 10th.
On the second run at this tight test Phil Wilson drove the same as his previous run, almost identical time resulting for the fastest time of the day (26.96), Jason Sims (27.25), Geoff Wilson (30.06), Dylan Maloney (30.54), Henry Sims (30.59), Cohen Hamilton (30.83), Max Viitanen (31.15), Josh Munn (32.44), Rebel Skirving (33.80) and Dillan Young (34.66) for 10th.
The next change of “crossed four point” was a challenge and Phil Wilson’s 20.38 seconds run made the top of the sheet, with Henry Sims right on his heels (20.62), Jason Sims (20.93), Geoffrey Wilson (22.49), Max Viitanen (23.17), Dillan Young (24.65), Blair Meek (26.18), Cohen Hamilton (26.52), Dylan Maloney (27.62) and Josh Munn (24.53) dropping to 10th with his cone penalty added.
Dillan Young turned up the attack knob in his Pulsar, rocketing around in a 19.97 seconds blast for the quickest run, Henry Sims also a 19.99 good for second spot, Phil Wilson (20.52) nearly the same previous time but now third spot, Jason Sims (20.98), Harrison Bliss (21.99), Geoff Wilson (22.81), Dylan Maloney (23.37), Josh Munn (23.56), Blair Meek (25.78) and Cohen Hamilton (26.01) rounding out the 10 at the top.
Involving a small amount of reversing, “waltz slalom” featured a forward “slalom” and involved reversing between the second and third cones on the way up, and, same cones reversed on the way back.
Top of the score sheet for this test was Phil Wilson (35.22) who worked the long-suffering Falcon pretty hard in the direction changes to get home fastest, Dillan Young (36.80) next, Jason Sims (37.98), Geoffrey Wilson (40.49), Henry Sims (41.34), Harrison Bliss (41.76), Cohen Hamilton (43.00), Scott Bradley (43.24), Josh Munn (44.72) and Rebel Skirving, with another “smooth” run, rounding out the 10 with her clean 49.04 seconds run.
Phil Wilson repeated the previous run in the second go with (35.44) to set the pace, Jason Sims (37.10) next home, Harrison Bliss (38.36), Scott Bradley (40.93), Cohen Hamilton (41.19), Dillan Young (36.78 + 5 seconds = 41.78), Henry Sims (43.43), Max Viitanen (45.93), Geoff Wilson (41.92 + 5 seconds = 46.92) and Rebel Skirving (47.71) the quickest 10 for run 2.
“Open slalom” was next set up for the eager competitors to tackle and Phil Wilson continued his top day with a 25.76 second run the time to beat, Henry Sims next (29.51), Jason Sims (30.02), Max Viitanen (30.34), Cohen Hamilton (30.91), Josh Munn (31.66), Dylan Maloney (32.32), Scott Bradley (32.55), Geoff Wilson (33.14) and Rebel Skirving (34.50) 10th.
On the same test, second pass, Phil Wilson was a little slower, but still FTD (26.19), Henry Sims (29.04), Cohen Hamilton (29.13), Harrison Bliss (29.56), Max Viitanen (29.60), Josh Munn (29.83), Jason Sims (30.05), Scott Bradley (31.47), Geoff Wilson (32.00), Dylan Maloney (32.31) 10th.
Interesting to note, Jason Sims was third in the first heat with a 30.02, but dropped to seventh with an almost identical time of 30.05.
Another of the tight layouts, “atom bomb” was a combination of left, right, left turns and flowed reasonably well.
Phil Wilson continued to dominate the day, 36.78 good for the top score, Jason Sims (37.47) next home, Cohen Hamilton (39.01), Harrison Bliss (39.49), Marcus Brand (40.19), Geoff Wilson (40.49), Dylan Maloney (41.16), Scott Bradley (41.64), Max Viitanen (43.20) and 10th spot shared with WD time of 46.64 for the “lost sheep”, Josh Munn, Dillan Young and Henry Sims.
On the second attempt Phil Wilson trimmed his previous time by nearly a second to top the sheet with a 35.84 seconds run.
Cohen Hamilton made it to second slot, (36.49), Jason Sims (37.74), Henry Sims (38.83), Harrison Bliss (38.89), Marcus Brand (39.88) with another good drive in the “555” Subaru, Scott Bradley (39.92), Dylan Maloney (40.02), Max Viitanen (41.18) and Geoff Wilson (41.19) for 10th.
The test layout changed to “trefoil” which can be a handful if you cannot drift or handbrake turn the car.
Phil Wilson can do either in the trusty old Falcon and made it look easy with another fastest run against his name, 24.84 seconds the time to beat.
Jason Sims did his best work but had to be bridesmaid again (26.00), Cohen Hamilton next (26.52), Max Viitanen (27.51), Geoff Wilson (29.15), Josh Munn (29.31), Dillan Young (29.43), Scott Bradley (30.94), Dylan Maloney (31.43) and Blair Meek (33.37) 10th for this pass.
On the second attempt at this layout Phil Wilson (24.17) set the pace, Jason Sims (25.77), Harrison Bliss (27.00), Geoff Wilson (27.19), Cohen Hamilton (27.20), Max Viitanen (28.15), Josh Munn (29.23), Scott Bradley (30.81), Henry Sims (31.91) and Dillan Young (32.59) rounding out the top 10.
For the last change for a big day out, Director Sims put “crazy square” on the roadway to finish off in the dark.
Top drive for this test went to Henry Sims with a quick 20.13 seconds in the family Celica being posted at the top of the time sheet.
Dad and Director Jason Sims had to again settle for second spot, his best effort of 21.19 in the same car.
Phil Wilson 21.36) was third on this run, Harrison Bliss (21.38), Dylan Maloney (21.61), Scott Bradley (22.21), Geoff Wilson (22.44), Cohen Hamilton (23.17), Rebel Skirving (23.48) and Max Viitanen (24.88) the 10 quickest on this quick layout.
Repeat the run, Henry Sims proved it was no fluke, setting the pace with a 20.34 seconds drive, Jason Sims (20.56), Phil Wilson (20.57), Harrison Bliss (21.68), Dylan Maloney (21.91) really enjoying the day in the Focus, tied for fifth with Dillan Young (21.91), Josh Munn (22.05), Cohen Hamilton (22.75), Geoff Wilson (22.86), Rebel Skirving (23.65) making the top 10 again with the smoothest driving all day.
