The fee for adult duck hunting permits has almost doubled in 2025 from $55 to $100.
The open season commences on March 22 and runs until June 30.
A statement on the Department of Environment and Water explains there will be further annual increases at least until 2030.
“Following the inquiry into native bird hunting, a review of the costs associated with administering and managing an open season has been undertaken,” the departmental statement read.
“Permit fees have been adjusted and will continue to increase incrementally over the next five years, to more accurately reflect these expenses.”
A $50 annual fee will apply this year for each junior or concession permit.
Opposition Upper House leader Dr Nicola Centofanti recently told the Legisative Council the fee increases were banning duck hunting by stealth.
Dr Centofanti predicted the permit fee would reach $250 by 2029. She was also critical of the new ban on one particular wild duck species as it was not justified.
