Eagles enter Barber Shield break on a high note

Penola v South Gambier


Penola ended their first half of the Zema Estate Barber Shield season with a big home win over South Gambier on Saturday.


The Dees started the day at the crease and got off to a solid start.


Opener Sam Bradbrook had a solid innings, making 14 off 39 while the other opener Robbie Drenthen made a quick 10 runs off four balls.


It went downhill very quickly for the Dees as they struggled for the rest of the innings.


There were not too many batters making many runs as Jaggar Geary put up seven while Dean Harten made nine in the back end of the innings, with South all out on 60 runs.


Penola’s Michael Waters had a big day with the ball, taking five wickets and boasting two maiden overs.


The Eagles wasted no time chipping into South’s run total as Jack Mullan and Matthew Honner set the tone.


Mullan had a solid innings of 19 while Honner contributed seven.


The bulk of Penola’s runs came from Bredon Smart, who had a big day making 60 off 80 balls.


The Eagles got a few extra scores from Drew Clayfield and Eli Hunter, both making five.


Captain Michael Waters had a solid day in the back end of the innings, making 12 to help seal the big win.


Penola finished the day with 155 runs.


WICKET TAKER: West Gambier’s Kyal Chapman starred with the ball, taking three wickets.


Mil Lel v West Gambier


West Gambier got a big win over Mil Lel on Saturday off the back of two big performances at the crease from the Roos.


Mil Lel started the day at the crease after West chose to bowl.


Mil Lel got away to a solid start at the crease with openers Jarrod Sanders and Nick Walters contributing some good runs.


Sanders was able to make 15 off 44 while Walters put 21 on the board.


The runs continued as William Rowland had a great day, making a half century and ending on 55.


Mil Lel continued to build on their score as Archer Virtanen had a solid innings, making 36.


At the back end of the innings Mil Lel finished strongly as Jack Miller put 12 on the board while Boyd Millhouse made 11.


After 40 overs Mil Lel finished with a score of 170.


West’s Kyal Chapman had a solid day with the ball, taking three wickets.


At the crease the Roos got off to a shaky start with early dismissals of Nuwan Gunawardana and Jayden Prior, both falling for a duck.


Despite the rough start, opener Justin de Jong was able to steady the ship as he put some consistent runs on the board as he picked up a century, finishing on 102.


The big run scorers continued with Jake Blackwell at the crease.


Like de Jong, Blackwell did well chipping into Mil Lel’s run total as he also picked up a century, finishing not out on 110.


The elite batting continued down the order as West skipper Bray Stephenson finished the day strong, making 62 not out.


After 40 overs West finished with a big score of 287.

North Sportsmans v East Gambier


North Sportsmans came away with a solid win over East Gambier on Saturday at Marist Park.


The Tigers started the day winning the toss and electing to bat.


North was strong at the crease despite a duck from opener Brad Robinson.


The other opener Alex Hutton started well to get his side going, making 18 off 38.


The Tigers continued to put runs on the board as Michael Johnston had a great day, adding 47 to North’s total.


In the middle of the Tigers’ batting order they continued to add runs as Elliott Fisher made 20, while Nick McInerney chipped in with a solid 30 runs from 33 balls.


Late in the innings North had a run boost as Isaac Mulraney added 28 from 21 balls.


After 40 overs the Tigers finished with 170.


The Doggies started well with the bat as Alex Hill made 12 while Ben Hentschke passed his half century, putting 63 on the board.


East had a bit of a dry patch with ducks from Ben Robinson and Emerson Marks.


The Doggies continued to push as Dion Stratford went hard, facing 50 balls and making 48 runs.


In the back end of the batting order the Doggies struggled again as Ben Clark was the only player to get much going, finishing with 13.


East could not chase down the Tigers’ run total as they came up short, finishing with 158 runs.


North’s Matthew Robinson had a great day with the ball, taking four wickets while Isaac Mulraney claimed three.


SOLID PERFORMANCE: Despite the loss Mil Lel’s Nick Walters had a solid performance, making 21 runs.


Season break


With the first half of the season in the books North Sportsmans will head into the new year on top of the ladder with 57.1 points while Penola sit in second with 50.6.


Rounding out the top four are West Gambier in third with 48.5 and South Gambier in fourth with 34.5.


Just outside of the top four is East Gambier in fifth, they currently sit on 33.1 points while Mil Lel sit last on 30 points.
