Eagles soar home with big victory over South Gambier

South Gambier v Penola

Penola came away with a big win over South Gambier on Saturday at Blue Lake Sports Park.

On day two Penola picked up where they left off at the crease with Jack Mullan and Drew Clayfield starting with the bat.

Mullan fell first but not before making a big run total of 127.

Not long after Clayfield was dismissed but he also did a lot of damage, getting over the half century with 56 runs.

Besides Mullan and Clayfield, Penola did not get much more down the list with Michael Waters and Finn Skeer both making eight.

Penola finally declared after 52 overs with a run total of 252.

With a big run total to chase in front of them, the Dees continued to struggle at the crease on day two.

Both openers struggled with Sukhbir Singh and Sam Bradbrook not getting much going.

Singh only made 13 while Bradbook contributed four.

The low run totals continued down the list as James Miller was out for a duck while Adam Kuhl made seven and Noah Maxwell added two.

In the middle of the order Jagger Geary had a solid innings, making 11 off 20.

Despite Geary’s efforts it was not enough to put a dent into Penola’s run total as Kobi Maxwell, Ben Geary and Jakob Opie all fell on ducks while Scott McBain and Robbie Drenthen could only contribute one each.

South were all bowled out for 42 runs after 18 overs which sealed the win for Penola.

TOUGH LOSS: Thomas Smith and Mil Lel picked up a tough loss on Saturday against West Gambier at Malseed Park.

West Gambier v Mil Lel

West Gambier picked up their first win at home on Saturday as they secured a hard fought victory over Mil Lel.

The Roos started with the bat on day two with Jack Geddes and Kayne Badman at the crease.

Both players started well with Geddes falling first on 16 runs.

Despite lasting a while at the crease Badman did not make a big impact as he only scored four off 58 balls.

The tables started to turn when Jake Blackwell and Bray Stephenson came to the crease.

Both put together great innings as Blackwell made 26 off 82 while Stephenson scored 39 from 102 balls.

West continued to get runs on the board as Sam Willis had a solid contribution, facing 49 balls and making 25 runs.

At the back end of the order Sujith Nikethana and Shane de Jong finished strong for the Roos as Nikethana made 34 while de Jong put up 16.

West finished the day with a big run total of 188 which was enough to seal the win.

HARD FOUGHT WIN: West Gambier captain Bray Stephenson helped his side get over the line, making 39 off 102.

East Gambier v North Sportsmans

North Sportsmans picked up another win after a big day of fielding.

Evan Clark and Craig Lynch started at the crease for the Doggies, however neither made a big impact with Lynch making two and Clark four.

Down the list East could not get anything going as Ben Hentschke scored three and Alex Hill made four.

In the middle of the order there was a big rough patch as Alex Hentschke, Connor Little, Dion Stratford and Marc Roberts all fell for ducks.

At the bottom of the order Luke Patching and Ben Clark did not do much with Patching making four and Clark making three.

East finished their innings on 26 runs.

After a poor innings East were sent back into bat.

The Doggies got off to a better start with Ben Hentschke at the crease, as he was able to put up 54 runs off 86 balls.

Another Hentschke had a solid innings as Alex registered 33 runs on the board.

The Doggies got another solid contributor in their second innings, as Stratford improved on his previous performance, making 30 off 44.

Despite having a better innings the Doggies ran out of time to make up North’s total as they finished the innings on 127 runs.

North Sportsman’s Isaac Mulraney had a big day with the ball, taking a combined eight wickets in the two innings.

North captain Mitch Lewis thought his side played very well and believes his side has found some great form.

BIG DAY: North Sportsman’s Isaac Mulraney had a big day with the ball, taking eight wickets.

“In terms of how we played I thought we were near our best form, we would have preferred to see out our 80 overs with the bat, but to get to 200 was still a good score,” he said.

“But our bowlers were outstanding in the first innings, particle Isaac Mulraney, the pressure he and Tim Young put on the East batters was super.”

Lewis thought Mulraney was a standout in the win as well as Elliott Fisher and Nick McInerney with the bat last week.

“Isaac Mulraney was clearly the standout player for us, taking six wickets in that first innings was a huge effort but also credit to Elliott Fisher and Nick McInerney with the bat last week,” he said.
