Newly crowned Globe Hotel Big Bash winners East Gambier were unable to continue their winning form when they crossed the border to compete in the Warrnambool Moyne and District Cricket Association Sungold Cup finals.
The Cup finals consisted of teams from around South West Victoria with eight teams facing off in the quarter final, with the winners advancing to the semi finals.
To advance to the finals the Doggies had to take on Colac’s league champions Alvie CC but sadly could not get the job done as they came up short.
The Doggies started the day at the crease after Alvie won the toss and elected to bowl.
Opener Alex Hill struggled at the crease, making six off 10 while his opening partner Riley Flamank got some runs on the board, facing 21 for 18 runs.
Down the list the Doggies had a quiet patch as Emerson Marks was out for a duck and Jake Wight was dismissed on three.
East had a good stretch of runs scored in the middle of the order as Alex Hentschke was able to make 11 off 20 while Marc Roberts put 14 on the board.
In the back end of the innings Connor Little dug in and finished not out with 25 runs, however he had little support in the later overs as Ben Robinson and Ben Clark both made five.
After 20 overs East were 7/91.
East struggled early on with the ball to slow down Alvie’s openers as they put up scores of 34 and 15.
Throughout the innings the Doggies continued to struggle in slowing Alvie’s attack as they allowed their captain to make 27 off 34 to help seal the win for the Swans.
Alvie’s final score was 6/92.
East’s Liam Turley led the team in wickets with two.
East captain Emerson Marks thought his side battled hard on a tough pitch.
“It was a tough battle on a questionable pitch, with only 91 to defend thanks to a nice cameo from Connor Little and Marc Roberts,” he said.
“I thought our bowlers really worked hard and executed their lengths to take the game as deep as possible.”
Marks said he enjoyed the experience of going up against different competition.
“It was a nice change and a great experience to come across another 20/20 winning side in Victoria,” he said.
