Tenison Woods College has been creating awareness for the R U OK? Day message across the college community for the past eight years.
Today, as with every R U OK? Day, student Leaders will greet families at drop off points around the college grounds and outside of classrooms before school begins, proudly offering yellow ribbons and R U OK? Day stickers.
Before handing the ribbons and stickers over, students must take a pledge to ask their friends ‘Are you okay?’.
Staff and students are encouraged to wear a touch of yellow for the day. Adding to the energy and spirit of the day, music will fill the school grounds at every class change and to mark recess and lunch. Student Leaders under the guidance of Year 12 Wellbeing Leaders have organised lunch time activities, including:
• Class and buddy year level activities utilising the R U OK? Day resources
• Visit from community agencies, Headspace and StandBy – support after suicide
• Writing kind messages for students and sharing photos of happy life moment
s • Therapy dog visits
• Making friendship bands
• Food stalls selling yellow cupcakes & jellies • The amazing August Melodies band sharing their talents
• A Basketball match – Teachers vs Year 12 students
• Disco Staff members are also encouraged to participate in the day with each person asked to carry out an act of kindness to another staff member (selected at random).
The R U OK? Day message is more relevant and significant in our community this year more than ever.
