Electric feel for Millicent fuel station

Millicent’s most expensive building project in almost a decade has been earmarked for Billygoat Corner.

The anticipated multi-million-dollar makeover of the Ampol service station and bulk fuel depot has only been exceeded by the $17m extension to Boneham Aged Care Services in 2013.

Owned by Kain and Shelton Pty Ltd, it is proposed all buildings, canopies, underground tanks and pumps on site will be demolished and replaced with new structures including charging points for electric vehicles.

Plans have been submitted by an interstate architectural firm to Planning SA and public comment has been invited until February 7.

If all goes to plan, the new facility will have 17 car parks and extensive landscaping.

The relevant planning authority in the matter is Wattle Range Council.

Kain and Shelton Pty. Ltd is a subsidiary of the K&S Corporation which is a public company headquartered in Melbourne.

According to its latest annual report, the significant shareholders include members of the family of late Mount Gambier businessman Allan Scott who bought a significant share of the fuel and transport business in the 1970s.

K&S Corporation chairman Tony Johnson hinted at the Millicent project in his address to the company’s annual general meeting in August.

“An expansion of our (fuel) network and the completion of several key projects to enhance our retail offering are currently being progressed,” Mr Johnson said.

His company told the Australian Stock Exchange on Monday of an improved financial outlook.

“Based on unaudited management accounts, K&S Corporation now anticipates that underlying profit before tax for the first half of 2021/22 will be between $11.2m and $12.2m,” the company stated.

“The underlying improvement is a result of stronger trading across a number of market segments.”

The K&S Corporation operates Millicent’s only other service station which is the unstaffed Pines Service Station on Mount Gambier Road.

Last year, the K&S Corporation purchased the freehold from Wattle Range Council of the recently-closed service station on Adelaide Road, Millicent.

The SE Voice has contacted the K&S Corporation for comment.

There were three other service station developments in Millicent in the month of November.

The one-time Turner’s Roadhouse on Mount Gambier Road returned to the open market and it last operated as a service station in 2011.

A company associated with the On The Run chain submitted plans to develop a service station at the Billygoat Corner site it has owned since 2015.

Perry’s Fuel Distributors also wants to erect a service station on vacant State Government land near the George Street roundabout.
