Everything’s bigger in Texas – even the country music awards

A former Mount Gambier singer songwriter has been recognised internationally for her contribution to music at the recent 2024 Texas Sounds International Country Music Awards.

Nearly 40 artists from all around the world gathered at the Memorial City Hall Performance Center for the awards in Marshall, Texas.

Despite being an Australian country singer, Anne Fraser won the Texas Spirit Performer of the Year award which is given to a performer who embodies the spirit of Texas music in their music and their performances.

Ms Fraser said it was a shock and an honour to receive the award.

“They told me they thought my personality and my lyrics and I guess the way I deliver my music fit in best with that award,” she said.

“It is lovely to feel like you have an impact on people especially when I have only been doing this such a short time.

“I think receiving anything when you have put such an effort into something is lovely and rewarding.

“I want to continue providing authentic original music to Australia.”

Ms Fraser is no stranger to awards, having won the 2024 Best Female Bush Ballad of the Year at the Australian Independent Country Music Brumby Awards in January for the second year in a row.

Ms Fraser’s said her award winning song ‘Beneath Australian Stars’ is an Australian bush ballad penned about “how beautiful it is to be under Australian stars and likening them to a blanket of protection”.

Ms Fraser will receive her award and perform her original songs ‘Beneath Australian Stars’ and ‘Together in Grace’ at the awards ceremony on January 16 next year.

The awards are held annually at Werris Creek near Tamworth, New South Wales and recognises artists who have contributed to the Australian bush ballad genre through exceptional song writing or vocals.
