Extra referee support

Football South Australia (FSA) has announced new initiatives for soccer in the region to strengthen support for referees.

In a significant move to bolster the recruitment, retention, and support of match officials, FSA this week supported several new initiatives endorsed by a recent presidents’ meeting representative of the Limestone Coast clubs.

A FSA spokesperson said the changes came as part of an ongoing commitment to enhancing the football experience for everyone involved, particularly our referees.

The main initiatives include increased payments for match officials, introduction of match day supervisors, a commitment to zero tolerance for abuse and building on the success of the “Respect the Ref” campaign.

Effective immediately, the payment rates for match officials have been revised to reflect their critical role in the sport. The new rates are as follows: Senior Men A Grade/Seniors increased from $90 to $120; Senior Men B Grade/Reserves $65 to $80; Senior Women A Grade/Seniors $65 to $80; Juniors (11-a-side) Under 17 $55 to $80; Juniors (11-a-side) Under 16 Girls $45 to $50; Juniors (11-a-side) Under 14 $30 to $50; Juniors (9-a-side) Under 13 Girls $30 to $40; and Juniors (9-a-side) Under 12 and 12 Develaopment $30 to $40.

“These adjustments not only reflect the importance of our referees but also aim to attract more individuals to officiate matches, ensuring the smooth conduct of games,” the spokesperson said.

“To provide additional support and oversight, clubs have initiated the appointment of a match day supervisor. This role will involve ensuring the environment is respectful and that all participants adhere to the rules and regulations. The match day supervisors will be easily identifiable by the hi-vis vests provided by Football SA, distinguishing them from other officials.”

The spokesperson said the new initiatives build on the momentum of the successful “Respect the Ref” campaign launched in May.

“This campaign, which introduced bright orange armbands for referees under the age of 18, has been instrumental in promoting respect and safeguarding our young officials,” the spokesperson said.

“The campaign’s success has highlighted the importance of creating a supportive and respectful atmosphere for referees, leading to these further enhancements.

“Football SA, LCFA and the Limestone Coast clubs remain steadfast in their zero-tolerance policy towards abuse and inappropriate behaviour. The introduction of match day supervisors and increased support for referees are vital steps in reinforcing this stance.”

The spokesperson said social media posts and community engagement will continue to highlight these initiatives, ensuring widespread awareness and compliance.

“As we move forward, these changes are expected to significantly improve the recruitment and retention of referees in the Limestone Coast region. By increasing payments and providing additional support, we are creating a more attractive and supportive environment for match officials,” the spokesperson said.

“Football SA, LCFA and the Limestone Coast clubs are dedicated to fostering a positive and respectful football community. These initiatives, along with the ongoing Respect the Ref campaign, are pivotal in ensuring that our referees feel valued and protected.

“Together, we can make a lasting impact on the sport, ensuring its growth and development for years to come.

“Respect starts here, with each one of us doing our part. There is no game without our referees. Let’s protect them, respect them, and support them.”
