Farm fire support rolls out

The Mount Gambier Hay Run has once again rallied to help fire-affected farmers by delivering donated loads of hay.

Run organiser Adam Smith said locals had acted quickly to help those affected by this month’s Poolaijelo fires, just over the Victorian border.

“We have done a few loads over the last few days, taking hay over the border to those who need it,” he said.

“Those farmers have suffered some pretty heavy stock losses, so we did not need to take as many loads over as we normally would in these circumstances.

“It’s cruel to hear the stories of how many they have actually lost.”

Mr Smith said organisers were waiting to learn what else they could do to help their friends over the border.

“We have had a lot of hay donated so we can take it if they need it,” he said.

“But we also want to get through this fire season and then we will start helping farmers who need hay due to drought conditions.

“We have got so many people standing by just waiting to jump in and help.

“It is really heartwarming and as always I’m so proud of our community and their willingness to help others in need.”
