Fire crews on alert

Fire crews were kept busy over the weekend with several major blazes in the Limestone Coast.

The fires broke out at Nora Creina, Fox and Tilley Swamp as temperatures soared in the region on Saturday.

The CFS had warned of dangerous fire weather conditions ahead of the hot and blustery conditions.

A CFS spokesperson said higher than usual temperatures this late in the season, with no significant rain, posed a challenge to prepare for.

As the temperature climbed on Saturday, the blazes broke out with numerous crews called in from across the region to assist.

At the height of the biggest fire at Fox, which has burned through approximately 600ha south of Lucindale, more than 100 firefighters were on the ground, assisted by aerial bombers, including two large air tankers sent from interstate.

Despite about 3mm of rain falling on the fireground, high south westerly winds continued to create challenging conditions for crews, with gusts of up to 60kph.

The Fox fire continues to burn, with the CFS yesterday undertaking burning out operations on the fire edge.

“Approximately 30 firefighters are continuing to work on the Fox fire supported by Forest Industry Brigades, the Country Fire Authority, Department for Environment and Water, Farm Fire Units and contractors with heavy equipment,” the CFS spokesperson said.

“Isolated unburnt patches of vegetation along parts of the fire edge will be the key areas of focus for the burning out operations… to strengthen control lines in preparation for forecast hot and windy conditions on Wednesday.”

The spokesperson said firefighters have continued to work on extinguishing numerous hot spots and flare ups.

“The fire is still uncontained but is not increasing in size, with approximately 600 hectares burned as of yesterday (Sunday) afternoon, within a large patch of private native scrub and plantation timber. The fire has also impacted at least one uninhabited property,” the spokesperson said.

“A base camp and staging area have been established at the Naracoorte Showgrounds, with the Salvation Army providing meals to firefighters and the Incident Management Team.

“Resources are being strategically moved across the region with the fire adequately resourced with trucks and aircraft to suit the current fire behaviour.

“Emergency services will be working on and around roads in the area, and motorists are advised to stay away. Roads have been closed due to this incident, and it is unknown when they will be reopened.”
