Fire risk crackdown

South Australia Police are committed to preventing deliberate, reckless or negligent lit fires in the Limestone Coast this fire danger season and will be taking a zero tolerance approach.

Police have recently attended two fires both caused through the use of angle grinders in poor weather conditions.

In each incident, it is alleged neither person complied with the regulations for the use of angle grinders, mitigating the risks of a potential fire.

Both fires occurred during gusty wind conditions.

About 9.30am on Wednesday, December 8 a 52-year-old man was fined after an angle grinder sparked a fire at Bordertown, damaging approximately 200m2 of vegetation.

The second, which also occurred that day about 1.15pm 1km north of Frances, saw a 69-year-old man fined after an angle grinder sparked a fire that destroyed a wheat crop belonging to a neighbouring farmer, approximately 60 acres.

“Fires caused by deliberate, reckless or negligent behaviour not only destroy communities and properties but have the potential to kill,” a SAPOLj spokesperson said.

“If you see a fire, call Triple Zero (000) immediately.

“If you see any people or cars acting suspiciously please call the Police Assistance line immediately on 131 444.

“If anyone has any information about people deliberately lighting fires or engaging in reckless or negligent fire lighting behaviour, please contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or online at www.crimestopperssa.com.au – you can remain anonymous.”
