The 2022 Veolia Limestone Coast Women’s Football League home and away season wrapped up last weekend with teams now shifting their focus towards finals.
Kalangadoo took on the might of Kybybolite in a one-sided game at Penola and it was a game of keepings off for the Tigers.
Kybybolite was in fine form moving the ball forward and put the pressure on the Magpies defence and when the opportunity to score was presented, it was taken with both hands.
The Tigers’ midfield combined well with their forwards and the league’s leading goal scorer Sophie Henschke proved a handful when she had the ball, scoring every time.
Annabel Mould was also dominant around the ground gaining possessions and sharing the ball with her teammates.
Hard work and perseverance were needed for the Magpies just to gain the ball while Kyby was superior in this game and led at every change.
Kalangadoo did have some good performers on the day and displayed some improvement over the course of a tough season.
In the other game at Penola the home side played host to an up and about Millicent outfit.
The Saints were coming off a maiden win last week while the Eagles went down to the ladder leaders South Gambier.
Both sides started well as the ball went up and down the ground like a yo-yo neither team found scoring easy thanks to strong defences.
But when the Eagles played the style of football needed to break through they looked the goods and started to score with ease.
The Saints were in trouble but still managed to put the pressure on the Eagles defenders.
The game was tough and tight with plenty of skill errors from both sides and Penola took advantage of this to show they were still a good side when it counted.
It was a dominant and high-scoring game by the Eagles in which they kicked 18 goals to account for the Saints in a great display for the home crowd.
For the Saints hopes were high, but they could not stop the rampant Eagles with Caroline McGrath, Ellise Berkin, Heidi Berkin, Simone McDonald and Emma McDonald setting up the win.
Amy-Lee Hay, Courtney Pond, Megan Tilby, Laura Chester, Michelle Robinson and Lauren Potter fought hard for Millicent.
Casterton’s Island Park also played host to a couple of games of women’s football.
Fourth place Mundulla travelled to take on the North Gambier side and it was the Mundulla Tigers who ran over the top of the yellow and black variety.
Mundulla kept the North side goalless all game to finetune plans before going into the final series.
The defence of North was busy all day and had their work cut out, unable to contain the might of their opposition.
Mundulla’s better players were the ever-reliable Casey McElroy, Zoe Hawker, Kellsie Turner, Kellsey Hinge, Natasha Horne and Ann-Elisa Pickering.
While North was undermanned, Yenna Joyce, Chloe Perryman, Eadie Mustart, Fiona Young, Lorelle Walker and Gabrielle Tilley all stood tall during the game.
Also at Casterton the top of the table team South Gambier took the short drive across the border to play the home team.
The Demons dominated play through sheer run and carry and while the Cats maintained pressure, it was not their day.
The Demons claimed the points to finish a perfect home and away season on top of the ladder.
Casterton Sandford should be proud of its last two quarters holding the top side scoreless which is an achievement.
Once again it was Libby Howe-Morgan, Dakota Trotter, and Lauren and Chelsea Frost that shared the best player honours for the Demons, while for the Cats Sophie Arkun, Madison Mutch, Carlie Smith, Chloe Finnigan, Chloe Foster and Scarlett Jarred performed well.
