Former church reaches market

The former Kalangadoo Catholic Church is on the market.

The 120-year-old stone structure will be auctioned on-site at 2pm on March 6.

A capacity congregation had attended the final Mass at Saint’s Joseph’s Church last August.

Among the 100 worshippers were six priests, Penola-based Josephite nun Sister Loreto O’Connor and Primary Industries Minister Clare Scriven.

Regular services had not been held at the church for several years and there were rising maintenance costs.

The foundation stone was laid by Dean Michael Ryan of Mount Gambier in 1904 and it was blessed and dedicated on January 22, 1905.

The sole church remaining at Kalangadoo is now St Alban’s Anglican Church which was erected in the early 1960s.

The former St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church became an upmarket B&B almost 10 years ago.

The one-time Uniting Church and adjacent hall was sold to private interests several years ago and now hosts regular weekend community markets.

Last month, the former Beachport Uniting Church sold at auction to a neighbouring property owner for $456,000.
