Fresh face to lead South

After years of near misses, South Gambier has turned to a new man to lead the side back to the top.

The Demons have always been in the premiership mix in recent years, but have not reached the big dance since the final flag of their glory run in 2015-16.

In 2019-20 South was on course for a semi-final win, but East’s tail wagged and scraped over the line by two wickets, while last summer Penola skittled the side for 83 in an effective quarter final.

With departing captain James Dunn making a move to the city, the leadership reigns are now in the hands of imposing all-rounder Cam Jorgensen.

Jorgensen has never skippered a team before and cant wait to take on the appointment head on.

“I am really looking forward to it and it will be a challenge to start off with after the loss of some key players,” he said.

“But hopefully some of the kids coming up can fill their shoes and grow into the future.

“I have never been a captain before, but have coached junior sides and I can bring across that experience.”

Despite Jorgensen’s lack of experience, he already has a game plan in mind.

“I think we will start quite defensive trying to limit the opposition scoring,” he said.

“We want to make teams try and beat us taking the aggressive route which will make us better off when chasing or setting a total with the bat.”

The Demons will have to find a way to make up for the loss of over 7000 runs and 300 games of talent.

Josh Thompson has hung up the gloves for good, while prolific batter David Somerfield is also spending some time away from the game, but could be interested in the one-day fixtures.

Youngster Ethan Sims has matured recently to become the main man behind the stumps, while Daniel Loupos appears set to open the batting alongside Adam Kuhl.

Robert Drenthen and Jakob Opie will be key with the ball.
