Amajor milestone in Community Kids Mount Gambier’s reconciliation journey has been realised.
As part of Community Kids Mount Gambier’s commitment to reconciliation Member for Barker Tony Pasin has delivered the Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and Australian flags to the centre for the team to display in their foyer.
The initiative aligns with the service’s recently published Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) and coincides with the lead up to National Reconciliation Week.
Community Kids Mount Gambier centre manager Ella McIntyre said this was a significant milestone in the centre’s ongoing reconciliation journey.
“We are committed to creating an environment that is inclusive and culturally safe for all of our children, families and team,” she said.
“The flags will be displayed in our foyer alongside a copy of our written acknowledgement of country and artwork by local artist Bianka Carson to show our recognition and thanks to the Traditional Custodians of the land on which our centre operates.
“As early childhood educators we have the honour of educating children about the shared histories, diverse cultures and varying perspectives in our communities as a key step in creating greater inclusion for everyone.”
Mr Pasin visited the centre to present the three flags.
“Displaying the three flags together is an important symbol of our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and will encourage the children to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia to unite and not divide us,” Mr Pasin said.
“I congratulate Community Kids Mount Gambier on this great National Reconciliation Week initiative.”
The children and team will also be attending a number of events being held during National Reconciliation Week to help strengthen community connections.
