Ghosts and ghouls take over streets

The Blue Lake city was awash with red on Saturday as the 14th annual Mount Gambier Zombie Walk hit the streets.

This year’s attendance rivalled last year’s turnout with up to 100 people hitting the streets in spooktacular style.

Participants met at Vansittart Park at 4pm before they walked down the main street at 5pm and finished in the Cave Gardens where everyone received a lolly bag.

The event started early with guys and ghouls in their creepy costumes camped outside of Aussie Disposals for the business’ Halloween barbecue from 9am -2pm.

Mount Gambier Zombie Walk head organiser Sharmaine “Sharky” Fogarty said the event was a full day format for the first time.

“We rocked up there and we were just hanging around, taking photos with the people that worked there,” she said.

“Then we ended up walking around town dressed up for the rest of the day telling people about the walk.”

There were prizes including skull candles, Mount Gambier Zombie Walk mugs and custom zombie notebooks awarded to the best dressed participants.

Ms Fogarty said detail was key, with props sealing the deal for the best costumes.

“I think it’s the props that stand out the most,” she said.

“The Wednesday Addams one stuck out that my friend Emily wore and they had a little prop of Thing but they modified it themselves and repainted it to make it even more real.

“Then her dad had a really cool looking facemask that he crafted himself as well.

“The one that won for the best dressed man he had a whole bag of body parts in his backpack and his face was all painted.”

Ms Fogarty said the event has raised over $200 this year for the Belltower Op Shop with the raffle still to be drawn.

“We have not drawn the raffle yet so I’m hoping to sell a few more tickets for that and we’re hoping to have it either the next week or two, a charity barbecue at Bunnings and we’ll draw the raffle there,” she said.

First prize for the raffle is a sleeping bag donated by Aussie Disposals, second is a customised zombie notebook and Dan Murphy’s voucher and third place wins a customised zombie notebook and a Royal Copenhagen Ice Creamery voucher.
