The Millicent Gallery currently is hosting an exhibition by internationally acclaimed Jam Factory icon Clare Belfrage, South Australia’s leading glass blower. The exhibition, ‘A Measure of Time’ celebrates the achievements of Ms Belfrage, her significant national and international profile and considerable influence in her chosen field.
With a career spanning almost three decades, the multi-award-winning artist has forged an international reputation for her finely detailed glass sculptures that marry organic blown forms with intricate line work. During her career, Ms Belfrage has maintained a vibrant studio glass practice and is known for her distinctive artworks in which complex patterns of fine glass lines trace her forms.
The characteristically fluid lines that are found throughout Ms Belfrage’s works are part of a technical breakthrough involving the artist’s innovative use of fine glass rods known as ‘stringers’. The resulting surface has an almost textile-like quality akin to those produced by knitting and weaving.
As very few glass artists have extended their knowledge and experimented with the practical application of drawing with stringers as much as Ms Belfrage, she is widely regarded as an ardent pioneer and innovative developer of the technique.
Art Gallery of South Australia Artistic Programs Assistant Director Dr Lisa Slade launched the exhibition last month and it closes on March 27.
