A locally written history book has been awarded a prestigious medal by the History Society of SA.

The Accidental Heiress: Journey of a Glencoe Squatter’s daughter, written by Carol Grbich and John Berger, won the Keain Medal for the best history book written in 2020 about South Australia.

Ms Grbich and Mr Berger are members of the Glencoe National Trust Group who look after the Glencoe Woolshed.

They decided to write a brief history of the Leake family who built the woolshed back in 1863 – but the further they delved the more exciting it became.

Ms Grbich said the Historical Society of SA had been in existence since 1974.

“It has as its members the most well-known historians in the state so it is a great honour as apparently there were a large number of historical books published last year,” she said.

“The Keain Medal is a new one and this is the third time it has been awarded.

“The chair of the HSSA said the ‘Heiress’ was the best produced book and had the most interesting content of all the books which were reviewed.”

Ms Grbich said the book ventured from the backblocks of Glencoe and Lake Leake in South Australia to considerable wealth, generosity of spirit and connections with royalty in England, which was “an interesting journey for a squatter’s daughter”.

The book is available from Collins Bookshop, the Main Corner and information centres in Mount Gambier, Millicent and Penola and online from Adelaide Booksellers.
