Glencoe v Port MacDonnell
Glencoe and Port MacDonnell faced off at the Murphies home courts in what looked to be an intriguing battle.
After only falling short to the reigning premiers by five goals in Round 1, the Demons came out ready to cause an upset, however the inclusion of Glencoe’s Jenna Paproth from that first clash loomed as another challenge.
The Murphies came out the blocks the more settled side, attacking with patience to find to feed to the likes of Chantelle Cocks and Jenna Paproth with precision, making it hard for the Demons defenders to have an early impact.
At the other end of the court the combination of Megan Hein and Kori Collins took longer to adjust to the tight Murphies’ defence.
Some early missed goals and forced pressure passing set up an early lead for the Glencoe side.
As the quarter wore on the Port Mac defenders lifted their intensity to win back some much needed ball for their side, however they were unable to stop the strength of Cocks under the post, who scored nine goals from 10 attempts.
The Murphies headed into the first break leading 15 to 10, with Port Mac playing coach Hein came out to impress in the second quarter.
She led by example attack, receiving plenty of ball to set up play and be a focus under the post.
With her goalie partner Collins finding it difficult to get into a scoring opportunity under the lifted pressure of Glencoe’s Sarah Edwards, the leadership of Hein kept Port Mac in the game.
The Glencoe attack end continued their dominance with youngster Alice Tentye taking on the bulk of centre pass receives and working her way onto circle edge despite the immense pressure being applied by the Dee’s Kate Faint.
The defensive combination of Alana Berkefeld and Alysha Coon continued to pressure and contest any high balls entering the Glencoe circle.
When Port MacDonnell did gain turnover ball they struggled to transition through court, with the Murphies Donna Jaeschke, Chloe Pfitzner and Edwards clogging up the middle third and forcing the Demons into long cross-court options.
Port Mac made some changes to start the second half, bringing the fresh legs of Shannon Scheidl into Centre which moved Liza Mutch into Wing Defence and Faint to the bench while Glencoe remained unchanged.
Coon began to find her feet and limit the easy option of Cocks under the post for Glencoe.
Her pressure forced some wayward passing from the Glencoe feeders which allowed Port Mac more ball in hand.
Hein continued to dominate under the post and regained her connection with Collins to convert more evenly.
Paproth had to increase her workload in attack to find the front space and draw the double team off Cocks.
In a much more even contest Port Mac won the quarter by two goals, with the Demons looking to disrupt the calm of the Murphy side.
Port Mac made another change with defenders Berkefeld and Coon swapping bibs.
In a scrappy final quarter the Murphies were able to get the better of the Demons with a strong defensive line up. Port Mac struggled to gain ground, heading down court with the pressure amplified by Glencoe.
Chelsea Owen got the better of Hein in the final quarter and contested any passes in her vicinity. Pfitzner also began to reap the rewards of her hard blocking game with timely intercepts.
In the end the full court pressure from Glencoe overran the fighting Port MacDonnell side taking the game 51 goals to 39.
Robe v Tantanoola
In what was to be the game of the round with third and fourth fighting for the win, playerss were up against some tough wintry conditions in Robe.
The first quarter was hotly contested with Emma Gould and Keryn Ousey combining well in Tant’s goal circle, making it hard for Robe’s Georgia Perkins and Emma Grant to get their hands on a ball.
However, Robe had great defensive pressure down the court and were able to get a few turnovers and score from them. A very even first quarter with Tant winning the quarter by one goal.
The Tigers dominated the second quarter, with accurate shooting from Gould and Ousey, while Robe struggled to get the ball into their goalies and were up against some strong rebounding from Tant’s Tayla Rowe.
Half time saw changes from both sides, with Tant’s goalies Gould and Ousey swapping and Robe’s Halle Carter going into GA, Ellen Ramke taking WD and Tori Gluyas taking the bench.
Robe came out firing and played a much more controlled game, with Demi and Halle Carter moving well in the circle and Demi shooting with confidence and accuracy for the quarter.
Down the other end Perkins shut down Ousey – keeping her scoreless for the quarter.
The last quarter saw no changes to either team, with both teams fighting hard for the win – both teams scoring eight goals each to end the match 43 to 33 in Tantanoola’s favour.
Kongorong v Kalangadoo
Round 10 at Kongorong saw the strong outfit of Kalangadoo take on the young Hawks at home.
The first quarter of the game saw both the Magpies and Hawks go hard at the ball with Kongorong turning over the first ball of the game to score but the Magpies quickly settled after, moving the ball well and converting accurately.
Jayde Peacock for Kalangadoo was on from the second the whistle blew, working hard with the drive and feeding to Ebony McDiarmid who was accurate under the post.
With the Hawks looking nervous in the first quarter, the Magpies were able to capitalise tto hold a 15 goal lead at the first break.
The second quarter saw the wind not backing off, with the defensive line-ups for both teams having a real good crack across the court.
Abbey Duncan for the Magpies and Riley Buckingham for the Hawks battled hard in the circle, both at times being influential for their respective sides through the second term.
Lara Munro found herself out having a good look at the ball, giving her side plenty of turnover opportunities.
The Hawks eventually settled up in the second quarter with Ebony Lawson moving to Centre and bringing some composure to the Hawks young attack, but their hard work was not able to convert to the scoreboard where Kalangadoo pushed its lead out by 17 at half time with the Magpies 43 to Kongorong 10.
The Hawks went into the third quarter with work to do, with defensive pressure lifted all over for Kongorong, but it was not enough to run over Kalangadoo who also found a new gear after the halftime break.
Chloe Peacock in Wing Attack worked overtime for the Magpies both on the offensive and defensive while Duncan continued to control the game down the attack line.
This quarter also saw Lauren Kain out for a hunt at Goal Defence and provided more opportunities for her side, leading the Magpies to outscore the Hawks 21 to 4 as they worked fast and with accuracy.
Munro continued down the defensive end for Kalangadoo, working overtime for her side while Lawson and Peacock both did not ease up in a thrilling contest.
Rach Perry settled well into Goal Defence whilst Buckingham went to the bench but McDiarmid took the opportunity of a new combo to her advantage where she slotted 16 for the quarter and it was Kalangadoo that could ran away with it in the wind and pick themselves up the win 87 to 21.
Mount Burr v Nangwarry
Mount Burr had key goal shooter Ebony Clark and co-coach Simone Westerman unavailable for this game, witth youngster Ashlee Dean entering the side for her second game of the season.
It was a closely contested first quarter with both teams taking time to settle in goals.
The defensive pressure of Mount Burr’s Megan Thiele caused passing errors.
Thiele was also able to take strong rebounds and drove strongly down court.
Ella Easterby and Laura Schultz presented well and fed their goalies with accuracy in windy conditions.
Both teams had missed shots which meant it was a very defensive quarter.
Nangwarry’s Goal Keeper Kayla Gray took rebounds and made Mount Burr Goal Shooter Olivia Dean have to work hard to gain possession.
Mount Burr lead the quarter 11 – 6.
Nangwarry’s Gray made the most of her height, again taking rebounds from the Burr’s missed shots.
Mount Burr’s Schultz and Easterby created immense pressure in Nangwarry’s attack line after a turnover, regaining possession before Nangwarry managed to reach their attacking goal third.
They combined well to make circle edge and fed goalies with accuracy.
Nangwarry Goal Shooter Tahlia Wilson was the focal point in the Nangwarry goal circle, working hard to make position around the tight defensive pressure of Thiele and Caitlyn Payne.
Olivia Dean and Lauren Wheeler continued to rotate the Burr goal circle gaining possession.
They struggled in the conditions to make the possessions count, even when taking strong rebounds.
The quarter saw both teams take defensive possessions to keep the quarter quite even.
Mount Burr headed into the main break with an eight goal lead.
Both teams made changes, but the most notable was the return of Olivia Dean to Goal Keeper and Ashlee Dean to Goal Shooter.
This immediately made an impact for the Mozzies.
Schultz at centre and Thiele at Goal Defence caused multiple turnovers to help Mount Burr score a few goals in a row.
Thiele and OliviaDean limited opportunities for Wilson to gain possession.
Hayley Vanderhorst Goal Attack worked both outside and inside the circle to gain possession.
Goal Shooter in Wilson was the main focal point, but Olivia Dean made it difficult for feeders to penetrate.
Cassie Dinnison and Claire Ferguson worked hard to feed goalies from circle edge but attempts of goalies to get closer to the post, allowed Mount Burr to take possession of the ball.
Mount Burr had many more shots at goal this quarter compared to Nangwarry, helping the Burr to a handy nine goal lead.
Mount Burr lifted their intensity in the final quarter with more accurate shooting helping them extend their lead early in the quarter.
Mount Burr’s defensive pressure and the drive and strength of Shultz through the centre allowed goalies to gain possession.
Nangwarry Goal Defender Carly Ploenges created pressure in the circle getting tips on balls, but the deflections landed in Mount Burr’s hands.
Ashlee Dean and Wheeler had to work the ball closer to the post through the patience of Schultz and Easterby.
Despite the efforts of Dinnison and Ferguson to drive the ball forward, Olivia Dean and Thiele continued to force errors and make Wilson work hard to gain possession, limiting scoring opportunities for Nangwarry.
Mount Burr were too strong in the last quarter to run away with an 18 goal win.
