Golden girl delights Millicent family

A Millicent family is delighted with the avalanche of medals for Australia at the Olympic games.

Local couple Noel and Pat Seebohm are especially proud of the efforts of their Olympic swimmer granddaughter Emily Seebohm who won an individual backstroke bronze medal at the Tokyo event.

She was also recognised for her role in the 100m medley team winning gold.

Emily has also won medals of various hues at the 2008, 2012 and 2016 Olympic Games.

It is rare for a swimmer from any country to reach the podium in four consecutive elite events.

Emily is currently in quarantine at Howard Springs in the Northern Territory and grandmother and granddaughter have spoken via phone.

Pat is uncertain what the swimming future holds for the 29-year-old and there is no talk of retirement.

“Our son John said he would love to have his daughter Emily compete at the next Olympics in 2024 as he has never been to Paris,” Mrs Seebohm said.

“We have 13 grandchildren and we are proud of them all.

“Emily asked me if I had a favourite grandchild.

“I replied that I do not have a favourite but I also told Emily that she was my favourite swimmer.”

The Seebohms have been watching the Olympics Games on television in recent weeks and there was one particular flashback from several years ago which caught their eye.

“It was a very young Kaylee McKeown with Emily as she was her girlhood swimming idol,” Mrs Seebohm said.

“She had great success in Tokyo including the backstroke gold medal.”

The Seebohm family regularly send press cuttings from The SE Voice to Emily who has lived in Queensland for more than 20 years.

Their main sporting focus will now be on the fortunes on Saturday at Robe of the Mount Burr United Football Club where they are both life members.

The couple ventured to Mick and Jean Walker Oval at Mount Burr on Saturday only to see the Mossies lose by 69 points to the Hatherleigh Eagles.

Their grandson Nathan Muhovics is a Mount Burr stalwart and ex-skipper.

As a coincidence, he proudly dons the same green-and-gold colours each week as his cousin Emily Seebohm does with the Australian swimming team.
