Golfers defy forecast

An intrepid band of 41 defied the dire forecast of high winds and heavy showers and went off to Beachport for Monday’s round of SE Veterans golf.

The results were not all that good with 34 points from local John Howe, taking out First Division.

Runner up was Graham Pilgrim of Bordertown on 30 and another local Peter Buckley, on the same amount of points.

Second Division was won by the best score of the day from Millicent’s Jimmy Hyland with 37 points.

Another Millicent player Derek Bowering was next best a long way back on 27 points, while Lucindale’s Adrian Thiele had 26.

The ball rundown went to a very low 22 points.

The Ross Orchard prize was won by Gordon Fleming of Robe and Gav Sparrow of Blue Lake.

Only one NTP was successful and that was hit by new member Bill Mullan on the sixth.

One of the stalwarts with over 400 games, was  90-year-old Roy Mitchell of Beachport, who was run- ner-up in the Australasian Over 80’s championship.

Next Monday is the visit to Harrow for the three way challenge between SE, Wimmera and Glenelg districts.
