Good Friday – but for who?

West Gambier and South Gambier are set to take to the field tomorrow afternoon as the two sides face off in the Limestone Coast Football Netball League’s Good Friday clash at Malseed Park.

So far the reigning premiers have gotten off to a solid start to the season with a win and a loss to their name.

They started slow in round one at Casterton, however they bounced back well the week after with a big win over the Tigers.

The Dees have only seen the field once so far with a round two match up with Penola which resulted in a 68 point victory at home.

Both sides will be looking to build off their round two wins as they look to secure some wins early on in the season.

The Dees had the Roos’ number during last year’s home and away season as they faced off four times with South taking the win in three of those fixtures.

However in the finals the Roos had the last laugh as they had a huge 52 point win over South in the preliminary final at Millicent.

Both teams look slightly different to last year with the Dees bringing in some returning names including Todd Reid and Brock Keding who will play a vital role in South’s success this season.

The Roos, on the other hand, have lost a few key pieces from their premiership side but have replaced them well in the offseason with Jack Casey coming off a solid game where he kicked two.

The Roos will need to have solid performances from Lawrence Bradley-Brown and Jesse Pfitzner who are coming off quality games along with young Harvey Croker who provides a good spark and great speed for the side.

For the Dees Mitch Sims will look to have another great game after kicking four goals last round while Mason Hein will be an important piece for South’s success in the ruck contest.

With these two sides likely to be competing for the flag in September this early season match up will be a good challenge as they will likely have many more competitive contests down the road.

I think this match up could go either way tomorrow given it’s only early in the season, but despite that it’s guaranteed to be a great watch with top quality footy on display.
