Tenison Woods College captured overall first place when the 78th annual South East Interschool Athletics Carnival was held at Millicent High School on Friday.

The Mount Gambier college finished just ahead of Bordertown High School which made a 400km round trip to compete.

Dating back to the post-war years, the day-long carnival involved around 600 students from the four secondary schools in Mount Gambier as well as the high schools at Millicent, Naracoorte, Penola and Bordertown.

A well-attended working bee on the grounds on the Sunday preceding the carnival ensured the conditions were first-class.

The favourable mild weather also played a role in a number of records being broken across track and field.

The carnival began at 9.30am with a Welcome to Country and the singing of the National Anthem and concluded mid-afternoon.

Spectacular overhead drone footage of the athletes in action was posted to social media by Millicent High School and shared widely.

The MHS Student Representative Council manned a sausage sizzle and refreshments booth with profits going towards the purchase of outdoor seating.

The host school’s Year 12 Food and Hospitality class also undertook catering tasks.
