Hard-fought victory locked in with two-day format

South Gambier v North Sportsmans

North Sportsmans came away with a hard-fought win over South Gambier on Saturday, picking up their first two day match win of the season.

North started their first batting innings with intent as openers Alex Hutton and Brad Robinson got the ball rolling for the Tigers.

Robinson fell first on 14 runs which was followed by Hutton a few overs later after making 18 during his time at the crease.

The Tigers continued to hold their own at the crease as Michael Johnston lasted 28 balls but struggled to put many runs on the board, falling on four.

North’s saving grace in their first innings was Nick McInerney who put the majority of the runs on the board.

McInerney had a solid innings, making 44 off 88.

Other than McInerney, North struggled to get much going as they were all out for 107 with South heading back into bat.

South’s second batting innings started slow as their openers Sam Bradbrook and Sukhbir Singh struggled as Bradbrook fell on a duck while Singh made 11.

The inconsistencies continued down the batting list as Noah Maxwell had a tough day, only making five off eight.

Adam Kuhl was able to get a bit going when he came to the crease, putting 12 on the board off 14 balls.

The struggles continued as James Miller and Jagger Geary failed to up the ante during their time at the crease with Miller making one and Geary two.

Late in the innings South finally found some consistency and solid play as skipper Elwood Geary stepped up along with Robbie Drenthen.

Geary was able to put 35 on the board for South while Drenthen added 21.

After an up and down innings the Dees ended all out on 110 with North heading back into bat.

North came out of the gates hot in the final innings with openers Brad Robinson and Elliot Fisher setting the tone.

Fisher fell first after making 17 with Robinson falling next on 23.

The Tigers kept rolling after the first two dismissals as McInerney and captain Mitch Lewis put some big runs on the board.

Despite neither lasting a long time at the crease both did some serious damage during their time in the middle as McInerney made 44 and Lewis 41.

The Tigers finished strong as Nicolas Brown and Declan Kenny helped close out the win with Brown making 13 and Kenny contributing 15.

North Sportsmans sealed the win by making 168 in the final innings.

SOLID PERFORMANCE: South Gambier’s Robbie Drenthen had a great performance with the ball, taking eight wickets.

East Gambier v Mil Lel

Mil Lel got their second win of the season as they took down East Gambier at Allan Scott Park.

Mil Lel started well with the ball as they took an early wicket, claiming Ben Hentschke for a duck.

East continued to struggle putting large runs on the board as Connor Little only made four off 16 while Emerson Marks contributed 10 off 28.

The Doggies got some things going mid way through the batting order as Alex Hill and Alex Hentschke combined to do some damage.

Hill had a solid performance making 17 off 61 with Hentschke adding 36.

Opener Ben Robinson spent most of the day at the crease, facing 165 balls and making 32.

East had some solid contributors down the bottom of the list as Ben Clark made 14 and Marc Roberts chipped in with 10.

Despite that East were all out on 136.

Mil Lel headed back into bat to close out the day and the win as they had the game in control.

Archer Virtanen was the only one to put some solid runs on the board, making 14 off 18.

Mil Lel closed out the day and the win 5/26.

Mil Lel captain Jack Miller thought his side had a real team win with everyone contributing.

“It was a real team effort from the boys over the weekend, zero passengers, everyone contributed from bowlers to fielders,” he said.

“After being a strike bowler short due to sickness, Nick Walters stepped up and opened the bowling with myself and it worked a treat.”

“Bowling in partnerships is what we strive for and that was what we executed really well with.”

Miller thought a few bowlers really stepped up for the team with one of them playing his first A grade game.

“Tommy Rowland in his first A grade game for the club took three huge wickets, meanwhile Craig Hicks and Boyd Millhouse did well to tie down their respective ends,” Miller said.

BIG DAY OUT: Despite the loss West Gambier’s Sam Willis had a big day, taking a combined 10 wickets against Penola.

Penola v West Gambier

Penola came away with a solid victory over West Gambier on Saturday at Frew Park.

After heading into bat on day one, Penola were in a solid position as they started the day 2/33 and 24 overs in.

Eli Hunter and Lewis March started at the crease with March putting in a solid effort with 32 runs while Hunter made 12.

Penola really struggled in their first innings, getting all out on only 85.

West’s Sam Willis had a huge day with the ball, taking seven wickets in the first innings.

After Penola were all out, they were sent back in with hopes of catching up to West’s large score of 220.

Penola’s second innings was led by openers Jack Mullan and Lewis March who did some heavy damage.

Both spent nearly the whole innings at the crease as Mullan faced 126 balls and March 110.

Both took advantage of their time with the bat as Mullan hit the century mark, making 125 with March putting 37 on the board.

Both helped Penola get over the line and pick up the big win as they finished the second innings 4/186.

Despite the tough end to the day Willis once again had a solid performance with the ball as he took three wickets in the innings, making it 10 for the day.
