The Mount Gambier and Districts Health Advisory Council (HAC) has funded the purchase and installation of a new monitoring system for the paediatrics ward of the Mount Gambier and Districts Health Service.
The HAC purchased the two Phillips paediatric monitoring units as well as a central monitoring system, providing clinicians with real-time monitoring and early detection of deterioration – which is vital with younger patients.
Associate Midwife and Nurse Unit Manager Kayla-Marie says the team have wanted a system like this “for a very long time”.
“We love it. It just makes our lives a little bit easier, we’re very grateful to have it,” she said.
The new system also provides enhanced safety and reassurance for patients and their families, and extra privacy with monitoring possible from a central unit leading to fewer interruptions.
At a cost of $42,803, the Health Advisory Council approved the purchase at its November 2024 meeting. Presiding Member Josh Lynagh said the council was thrilled to see the system was recently installed, with members recently having the opportunity to see the system in person.
“The Mount Gambier and Districts Health Advisory Council are very happy to be supporting the work of the incredible paediatric team at the hospital, and hope the new system makes it easier for them to carry out their duties,” he said.
“The HAC is a community-based body that works in partnership with the Limestone Coast Local Health Network to represent the interests and needs of the local community in relation to health services.
“Acting as a vital link between the community and the health system, the HAC provides feedback, advocates for improvements, and supports initiatives that enhance the quality and accessibility of healthcare in Mount Gambier. Through collaboration, fundraising, and local engagement, the HAC helps ensure that health services are responsive, community-informed, and aligned with local priorities.”
