Highland Dance championship held in city

The annual Highland Dancing Southern States Championship was held in Mount Gambier recently, where many highland dancers showcased their skills and talents.

Around 300 people attended the event at Mount Gambier’s Icehouse stadium, which was conducted by The South Eastern National Dancing Association Inc.

South Eastern National Dancing Association Inc. president Margaret Reichelt said those who attended witnessed a high standard of highland dancing.

Mrs Reichelt said excellent entries were received from Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia.

“It was lovely to see everyone on the stage again after having to cancel the event in 2020 and 2021 due to COVID,” she said.

Queensland’s Petrea Gibbins-Doherty, South Australia’s Sharine Nicholson and Victoria’s Cheryl Wild adjudicated the championship event.

Mrs Reichelt said local Mount Gambier dancers performed well against strong national competition.

Hailee Pearce placed third and Laura LeCornu fifth in the 12/15 years section against 18 competitors and Abbey Freebairn was named runner up in the 16 years and over championships.
